I’ve been taking Vitamin D3 tablets 5000iu for well over a year now and on my recent blood test my level came in at
164.3 with a Range 50-220.
In the past my levels have always been low unless I supplement.
I haven’t been taking any K2 with the D3. My GP’s advice was to know take 1000iu of D3 (but I don’t listen to GP much as they’ve not been of much help in the past and I’ve lost my trust in them)
Can anyone advise me on how much D3 to take now for maintenance as I hardly get any sun at all and how much K2 to take to prevent build up of Calcium problems.
So I shouldn’t continue 4000-5000iu even if I take K2 with it ?
Thanks.

I take a 4000iu Vitamin D3 capsule that comes combined with 100 mcg vitamin K2 , and find it perfect . I’m uncomfortable being in the sun , so feel I need that amount . I never ask my GP for advice about vitamins ,. My trust has totally gone since I had such bad treatment after my Pernicious Anaemia diagnosis ( had to get it from a private doctor , as my symptoms were totally ignored —the old story that we still hear on this forum ) Best wishes .
Thanks wedgewood. I have read that it’s safe to take 4000iu daily according to studies.
Is it ok to take it daily as long as it’s with K2 or should it be adjusted in winter and summer.
I also don’t get much sun at all.
I think the problem is build up of calcium if you’re not taking K2 with it.
Although there are other side effects of taking too much, I don’t know how much that ‘too much’ is or if it means levels which are too high as in your blood test.
Can you send me a link or private message on which one you take please.
Yes I also believe too much of anything is no good but wanted my levels to increase as I had bone pain and it also helped with my mood. Do you find taking 1000iu keeps you in decent range, unless you’re getting some from being in the sun.
Dosing of D3 is based on your test result. Your level is optimal currently so you could lower your dose to 1000iu's as maintenance. I would suggest testing again before winter and the flu sets in just in case your levels have dropped.
Magnesium - most people in the world are low due to depletion in the soil. There are many types so find one to suit - not stearate. Yes magnesium works with D3 in the body ...
The labs where I live classify Vit D levels as normal when they are between 50 and 120 nmol/L. They used to classify deficient as between 0 and 25 and insufficient as between 25 and 50. It seems as though they are being more cautious and classifying anything below 50 as a problem.
I am surprised that the upper range you quote is 220. I don’t know much about it but unlike with B12, you can overdose with Vit D.
Do you have a bone metabolic disease (e.g. osteoporosis)? Have you talked over your Vit D levels with a Rheumatologist?
160 seems quite high. I was Vit D deficient and had the loading doses used to raise levels rapidly and take about 2400iu daily to sustain levels above 50. I have been advised to have levels around 80.
Perhaps request a referral to a Rheumatologist to review your levels, symptoms and dosage?
