Hi all. Hope everyone is well. Just looking for some advice and reassurance really. For the last few months I've noticed a lot and I mean a lot of hair loss. When showering drying and brushing. And even through the day when my hair is down. I was on ferrograd and vit d supplements until about 9 weeks ago. I wasnt told to stop taking them but I had bloods done to check levels 12 weeks ago and after a week I hadnt heard anything and was in for b12 jab so I asked for a print out. My vit d had gone from 40 to 50 and my ferritin from 27 to 70. I stopped taking them as I wasnt sure what to do. Now I'm starting to think this could be the issue. But i keep seeing the at 70 it shouldnt be happening.

Hair loss
B12 and iron deficiency can cause hair loss - so can hypothyroidism and a lot of other conditions. If you can't speak to your GP see if you can speak to a pharmacist.
Morning! All of this sounds very familiar! I am on iron tablets from the doctor, alongside self-injecting Cyanocobalamin weekly. My hair has gone incredibly thin and sheds A LOT. I was getting very worried about it, so read up on things. Apparently, it can take up to five years for iron levels to stabilise. My GP told me that the 'normal range' is a huge scope, so I wouldn't have stopped taking the iron at 70,so perhaps restart? I also read that biotin (B7) is important for healthy hair, so I have invested in some Hair, Skin and Nails tablets from Holland and Barratt. They taste vile, but are only one a day. So far, so good. Too soon to see any new growth and if it's any thicker, but I'm definitely shedding less.
All b vitamins work together and biotin ( vitamin H or b7) along with ferritin are direct cause of hair shedding. Ferritin as you said is hard to be raised without proper level of B12. So taking high doses of B12 in slow release form can help alot. All of the non functional with low B12 affected cells should get replaced with functional cells and it takes time. It's not only just nerve damage but cell replacement in damaged tissues should be take place so much resources is required to replenish cells and takes long time.
If the measurement for the VitD is pmol/L then your result is LOW. 100+ would be good. If the measurement is ng/L then around 60 would be helpful.
How much VitD were you supplementing ?
Thanks for the replies. I only stopped taking them as the doctor still to this day has never bothered to ring and say what to do so I didnt want to have to much. I restarted 3 days ago. Ferrograd with added vit c in the morning then 1000ug vit d with a zinc and magnesium supplement in the afternoon. Vit d was 40 nmol/l. After 3 months it went to 52 nmol/l. I did think about biotin but read that mot many people suffer with lack of that. Which one do you take?
There is one purely for hair, but this one has a broader range of b vitamins and other minerals. No adverse effects as of yet!
Hi
I recently had severe hair loss/thinning which seemed to coincide with me reducing my Ferritin supplement (desiccated liver capsules), my level had dropped. Whilst also finding out that my Zinc level was low following a blood test.
After 4 - 6 weeks of increasing my Ferritin and supplementing with Zinc prescribed by my Gp via private Endocrinologist my excessive hair loss seems to have stopped.
I have continued to take Vitamins B+ , D, K2 and B12 si (eod). Started taking Liothyronine (T3) in October 2021 alongside my Levothyroxine due to poor conversion.
I have Pernicious Anaemia and Hashimoto's
Hair loss/thinning can be really distressing. I had to change my hair style to hide my scalp, which had become very visible. People had previously always commented on my thick hair. My hairdresser last week noticed that my hair was no longer falling out excessively.
For now I seem to have found a solution 🤞
Good Luck
Does anyone have any names for the vitamens? Just so I can see if I can purchase them locally to try. Im taking a zinc and magnesium supplement so would it be best to stop that if anything I try also has it in do you think? I'm going for my b12 jab on thursday and I'm going to ask for an appointment for bloods done and hormones as the seems to have started a couple of years ago when I stopped taking the combined pill. It settled but has come back with vengeance.
I usually inhabit the Thyroid forum, for which I have created a downloadable document which just might help you.
helvella - Vade Mecum for Thyroid
The term vade mecum means:
1. A referential book such as a handbook or manual.
2. A useful object, constantly carried on one’s person.
Please don't get put off by the number of pages!
There is a section which has a list of all vitamins with their letter/numbers and names. Obviously, this information is not specific to thyroid or B12 issues.
Not everything is in this one document - my major medicines document is still separate!

Hi, I know hair loss is a side effect of PA. I have 2 friends with hairloss from the covid vaccine last year, this was confirmed by a trich specialist and dermatologist, I wonder if that is a possible reason? Hope your B12 is given to help whatever the reason.
