Does anyone know if local anaesthesia used by dentists deplete b12?

Ongoing saga of initially not fitting the criteria for emergency dental treatment in the current covid19 situation. I did fit it a month later. !

My third visit resulted in an extraction as in ' normal' times woukdve been crowned in April/ early May. I was in there 1hr 15mind Root was solid in very hard jaw bone I was told. Tooth broke . It went on and on . Needed more and more anesthetic to get it done and perform stitches. (Lost alot of blood. All that iron!! )

So was wondering about any b12 being depleted as well. The weakness and headaches feel like along while ago.

I realise an operation with it's own aftermath of trauma to be healed. and will be a set back of other ongoing symptoms of b12 deficiency but was not expecting to be in bed again!!

If it had come out -'cleanly' I wouldnt have needed more antibiotics . But on those too. Have got in natural yoghurt and actimal which I am tolerating . Being b12 deficient/PA seems to make everything worse . Even not talking and nodding and any movement set of bleeding again . Never known anything like it . Stopped now so will have ti uo my iron again I think. Had just reduced it as ferritin up to 57!!!

Any thoughts on b12 being depleted please

Thank you. Much appreciated .

Good morning Nackapan so sorry your having such a rough time of it anything dental really can pull you down.

I think you may have just had Valium sedation rather than full blown knock you out sedation? I wouldn’t think that would have any adverse effects as I always had that for dental treatment because I was so phobic,I might be wrong though.

I’m glad you got it out and hopefully you’ll feel the benefit in a few days,I used to have to get the cavity packed with gauze because I bled so much and of course being so phobic about blood too my poor husband used to go into my mouth after a day or so and remove it gross I know lol that’s why I love him so much all the disgusting things he does for me without batting an eye lol.

I wouldn’t worry about being In bed again it’s traumatic for you so your body and mind needs plenty rest,I used to sleep for days after even a tooth extraction so let your body do what it wants to recover.

Your so brave and you’ve done well getting through this.

Take care xx

Wrote a reply and lost it!

Thanks.

Just wasnt expecting ot to be that tricky.

When the second dentist was brought in I thought here we go.

I had alot of local anaesthetic 3 ? As it took si long .

The stitches took a while too.

The extra headaches may be from the locals?

Just very different to one done in 2004 . I was well. Came out cleanly . Yes gauzes as I walked home .

I remember my neck being more sore than my mouth

Just wondered if b12 depleted from it ?

Iron will be !!

Hope your next appt. Okay TC

Anyone needing an tooth extraction . My first one was very different. It was looser and came out in one. It was a huge relief too.

No, the only anaesthesia that can affect levels of B12 is nitrous oxide (aka gas and air, aka entonox). Novocaine, or similar, will not affect it.

Okay thanks.

I suppose first procedure since b12 deficient

Wondering.... as wasnt expecting to feel this ill.

Just the iron to top up then

You may even have some bruising to your face later it’s so traumatic having difficult extractions done and in your case they’d be digging away to make sure they got all of the tooth out if it kept breaking,as I said very brave to sit through it.

Rest up and take pain relief if you need it don’t try and ride it out it’ll drain you. fbirder will have put your mind at rest.take care xx

It was the digging out bit that made me nearly eat it twice 😂

Thanks. Inevitable headaches but bleeding stopped. Oh yes on pain relief.

Just a shock as really wasnt expecting this I've had one out before in the dentists 2004 that was cleanly got out though . I walked home. Bled a bit longer . Probably because I walked.🙃 So different this time that's why I was wondering .

Anyway thanks for replies

Hello Nackapan, I had a course of dental treatment last year, prior to being diagnosed with hypothyroid. I had terrible side effects from the local anesthetic, headaches, feeling the nerves running up and down my body, deep gloom. I can totally relate to your experience of not expecting it and being knocked for 6. I do not know weather this was related to vit b or not, but do know it was awful. Thinking of you!

Thankyou

Yes certainly knocked me for 6

Good morning Nackapan hope you had a decent night and your feeling a bit better this morning xx

Morning .Bit worse this a.m but I think that's usual the day after the day after.

All the aches and pains come out. On top of 'the usual' b12 difficulties.

Must try and get moving . It's the head fragility that stops me.

Lots of puree from stuff I've made in freezer.

Thank so much for asking.

Do let us know how you get on TC

in reply to Nackapan

I will Nackapan thank you.

Take it easy today have a lazy day and get well remember your bodies been pounded by toxins from that tooth and the antibiotics will makes you feel awful so rest xx

Oh no, sorry to hear that you’re feeling so sick. I believe it’s only gas and air as per fbirder said. But I wonder if the stress/shock might make you struggle a bit. I gather that uses up b12. I hope you’re feeling a bit better soon.

Thankyou. It's on top of the ongoing symptoms to contend with.

Coudnt believe over an hour to get it out as tricky. Just bad luck with this tooth. In 'normal times it woukdve been crowned in may.

It's a set back in my new regime of injecting b12 more regularly.

I've had a tooth out before 8 years ago.

No comparison. You are right about the shock.

Everything seems more complicated with ongoing issues doesnt it.

Hi Nackapan, so sorry you've had to go through this.

You, Thrones and others are correct, a surgical extraction is traumatic for anyone, but especially when your general health isn't the best anyway.

If the anaesthetic was the usual local injections, I don't think there is any evidence that it affects B12.

Yes, the effects of bruising and infection will take a little longer to resolve, but I m sure the antibiotics will kick in more effectively now the tooth is out.

Take good care of yourself and hope you're feeling better soon x

Thank you.

It's like insult to injury.Especialky as it took so long as complications set in. I knew trouble when second dentist called in and music was put on for concentration.

Being blindfolded for the lights not pleasant either.

Like you say with it out there will be an end. Just takes longer with all the b12 stuff going on. Relentless

Hope you as well as can be . TC

It sounds daft, but putting a used tea bag ( ordinary black tea) on a wound helps to stop bleeding. Try it!

Nackapan profile image
Nackapan in reply to HeartyGilly

I did thankyou . Quite difficult not to burst it . So ended up squeezing a little onto a tea spoon and putting it over. It was my pureed veg soup that stopped it!!as had to eat for painkillers.

Bleeding stopped after about 8 hours.

Even moving set it off!!

Ah sorry to hear this. Hope you feel better soon.

How are you today Nackapan? Wee bit better I hope?X

Not yet! Feel worse than yesterday. Socket finally has a clot. So pleased with that at least. Did a b12 injection today

Really knocked me for 6 . Half way through antibiotics already.

Just sick of being in pain.

Thanks alot for asking.

Must start picking up soon. Dentist did

say it was tricky and it will take a while. That without ongoing stuff.

In 2004 I was back at work after 3 days after a an extraction. That was then.

Hope all tests getting organised for you in Oxford

TC

Sorry to hear that but give it more time still you’ll soon be up and about again you have good will power.I was naughty today and didn’t do my b12 shot I’m going to try and extend even by a day at a time and see how it goes. Its definately the folate tablets making me feel unwell like I’ve been run over with a bus,my muscles were just aching everywhere my wrists felt like they were ready to snap they were so painful it’s got to be that it’s the only change I made, I restarted them after being off for two weeks to get bloods done so I’ve now been off them two-3 days and already I feel the improvement can it really be the folate tablets causing this.?

Nackapan profile image
Nackapan

Goodness. I can relate totally to your good description of painful joints and muscles.i only have 100mcg or 200mcg of folic acid on the days I have a multivitamin.

I got up and went downstairs just to get moving last early evening . Thought things will pick up.

Last night seemed like i had a fever like bad flu and as you aptly describe hit by a bus feeling again and shaky. I'm on antibiotics so goodness knows what's happening to me. Perhaps all coming out after traumatic 1hr 40 pn the dentists chair.

Also csnt underestimate on top of ongoing symptoms. Quite scary though.

Good you trying a slightly bigger gap between b12 injections. Go slowly though . I went very slowly even going 3 weeks a few times . Sometimes feeling better. Then it all seemed to change again. Main think is setting the regime and keeping to it for a while to see.

I'm sticking to 5-6 days at present.

From 2 weekly for a year. (With the odd trial of 3 weekly)

I tried a short spell of every 3 days but found no different apart from a few more headaches.

What dose of folate were you taking?

Glad you improving off them.

Thanks for reply . Take care.

I was just taking the recommended dose Of Solgar 400Ug Folate(as Metafolin) once a day.

That’s twice I’ve tried it and twice had the awful muscle pain so I’m sticking to dietary folate now it was just awful. My folate is going up again I’ve just had it retested so I’ll stick to dietary then retest in 3 months again.

I just did my b12 shot there it hurt today but If I’m honest I’m not focusing properly and I’m very uptight so no surprise it’s my own doing.

You can’t have much longer on the antibiotics now just be careful of side effects in case your missing that.theres quite a few I can’t have it’s Flagged top of my notes in docs but idiots still gave me cipro last month which I didn’t take.

I think this professor is spot on he said he’s not happy about the kidney stones treatment and onthinking about it my flank pain does comes in waves I may not have it for days then wallop it’s back but kidney doc said no stones wouldn’t cause pain or inflammation where I’m saying but after prof questioned the whole thing I googled and it said quite clearly kidney stones can cause flank pain.i just know this guy is going to fix me.take care x

Yrs I've a good feeling too.

Yes folate good from diet.

One of my daughter has folic acid every day as tried less but her mouth and bloods say she needs it.

Mifgr be the sort you take if you do need it at any time in the future.

I think I've underestimated the ongoing ' head nerve ' problem. Also the oral surgery as not straight forward.

K had the same a antibiotics? a month ago when they did root canal work on the same tooth.

Despite feeling like overs fever with all the ashes my temo. Fine. So keeping up pain relief. Which I hate taking and have had far too much over the months . I'm alternating between paracetamol and ibuprofen. Both not good long term.

You are right any a antibiotic makes me ill. Last time not as bad just the oral thrush to treat. Iveva never to have again list too. If at all possible to avoid .

Amoxicillin is the chosen one for dental work.

Roll on some a answers for you

I was the opposite with my injection . Went well. No difference in how I feel but can take 3rd day.

T c

If you think your getting or got oral thrush with the antibiotics wait until the tooth cavity has healed over then use the coconut oil treatment you just take a teaspoon swish it around mouth then spit out it’s a natural anti bacterial treatment ,I have to be honest I swear by coconut oil for everything also if you get the thrush downstairs put coconut oil in the fridge to solidify then make pessaries and pop inside when you go to bed at night and that will kill the thrush it’s so good for all sorts.stay well lovely x

Okay thanks .

I have a jar of that.

Usually used for gluten free bread making and flapjacks when one of my daughters comes as gluten free.

Im having live yoghurt with every bowl of soup too. Didnt work last month on amoxicillin.....

well it was confined to my mouth so maybe it did help. Had never had oral thrush before . Maybe too many salt mouth washes??
