Hi this is a first time post - Pernicious Anaemi...
Hi this is a first time post
The first thing I would say is that a B12 count of 276 is not low enough for a diagnosis of B12 deficiency in the UK. However, unfortunately, diagnosis isn’t as simple as that as some will have a higher count and show all the symptoms while others can seem fine with alarmingly low B12 levels. Being weak and suffering from joint pain and headaches are certainly common symptoms of B12D but they are also symptoms of many conditions. A list of more of her blood results (along with the recommended levels as they do vary slightly from lab to lab) may help someone here to offer advice on the likelihood of her problems being B12 related.
I'm sorry I'm not in a position to tell you whether her condition is or isn't down to B12 but the one bit of advice I would give is to keep pushing for a diagnosis as too many like to fall back on vague diagnoses of age or depression. Unfortunately though, despite the talk about the NHS being open for business, I think most on here have found access to testing and treatment almost non-existent and I doubt if you are likely to make much headway until they return to some sort of normality.
The one thing I would add is that if you are sure her condition is down to low B12, then you can ask for treatment as an injection will not do her any harm and may of course do her much good.
I have all her blood results which ones would help get a better understanding? I didn't know what to post on here
I was hoping that someone else would jump in as I am certainly not experienced enough to offer advice on diagnosing B12 deficiency. the first thing I would reiterate is that while the symptoms you described are common with this condition, they are common with many conditions so there is nothing to say that that is what is wrong with your mother...and conversly nothing to say it's not.
It might be helpful if you added more symptoms as there are many that keep reoccuring on here that aren't always listed. Also you could include a full blood count, MCV (Mean Corpusculare Volume - size of blood cells); if she had homocystein or MMA measured. Or you could just upload a picture of the blood results with any personal identification removed. I'm hoping that someone with more experience will have a better feel for what the results imply...I'd be wary of offering much advice myself as I am just a sufferer who has come here with my own questions and looking to share my experiences.
