Hi I have what it says in the title :) what i'd like to know if there's anyone else with similar, if they also have chronic 24/7 sciatica and if so what do you do to manage it. I am on 6 gabapentin tablets a day plus cocodomal and use a tens and infa red massage yet still it's a pain :)

Morning BOB here

I suffer from sciatica, generally it goes on none stop for months on end, then niggles into the background for a while

I suppose it is always there in the background although it can flare and I am unable to sit or get around.

Suppose i do the same as you tens, tramadol and amytryptalene and celebrex that I am on for most of the time one way or another, life becomes predictable when in pain all the time you seem to look for calm periods.

I generally use a special shower head for hydromassage, also a hydro spa bath that I cannot use at the moment, somehow will have to do something in here soon, it is a loss.

Sometimes I will use heat pads and if other joints are hot will use ice packs from freezer wrapped in a dish towel.

Hope that helps

All the best

BOB

Hi thenunn, I have lumbar spinal stenosis from L2-L5. I also have sciatica in both legs constantly and other pain issues too. My sciatica is treated with amitriptyline and asprin (the closest to an nsaid I can use) and was previously on pregablin (lyrica). I suppose I am fortunate that TENS does give me some relief, however, there is a gentle excersise you could try too:

Which ever leg gives you pain (or both) stand as stright/tall as you can and lift up the toes on the sore leg whilst keeping your heel on th ground, as high as you can. Then press your chin to your chest - keep your body as tall/straight as possible. This can gently stretch your sciatic nerve, but only do it for a few seconds at a time.

Are you seeing a physio? If not ask your doctor about it, they could help. Also have you tried moving the TENS around (up/down)? As this may help.

Hope you find something to help you. Take care.

Hi Stampede thank you for that exercise I will try that and add it to my tool box. Yes I see physio ,at the moment they are concentrating on my upper back as I have grief there too lol . I put the tens in many areas ,but better than tens is a pen I got called pain gone,if I manage to get it on the right acupressure point that is very good. My heat massage. All of them bring some comfort for a short while but the sciatica never goes. I had it in both legs ,so they upped my gabapentin and the right side went, but the left side is always here.

I just keep as active as possible as I know the pain will never go so we have to get on it.

Thanks for your replies best wishes Jan

i have pain from lumbar spinal stenosis amongst other issues. i have a medtronic pump it administers a drug called clonidine and mophine directly to the fluid around the spinal cord and this helps me a great deal though not with the sciatic type pain from the spinal stenosis. i am taking Lyrica twice daily and amytriptilline nightly and this has definatel helped things a little but even so i cannot lie down or even lie back- i am in a wheelchair by day and i sleep sitting upright. they want to do some MRI's to check on my MS but they can't do them unless i am sedated because i cannot lie down without excuriating pain. having aid that as long as i sit upright the lyrica etc helps a lot. i am also currently waiting to have medial ranch block done- if this is successful then they will kill off the nerves in that area for more permanent relief

jst an additional item, i know someone else who has had severe problems from nerve impingement in the lumbar spine and he has a spinal nerve stimulator implanted. He has had electronic leads implanted into the spine, these are attached to a device that is also surgically implanted and it delivers an electric current that feels somewhat like a TENS unit but works differently. he gets great relief from it but even then he still has pain and most certainly has bad days. before they fit one of these units they place temporay electrodes and a temporay external unit for one week- if that gives you relief they replaceit with the permanet unit. you then have a little hand held unit that you can use to turn it up or down if needed. it was mentioned to me but i was not considered a suitable candiadte so we did not go through with the test
