Pain in right knee - surgery ahead ?

On behalf of my OH who has a knee problem. I've already been through knee issues and ultimately knee replacement surgery, November 2015. My OH remembers those days quite well and is probably in denial of what I went through.

That was some 9 & half years ago now ...... can anyone give me the heads up on current/modern surgical techniques these days .... back in my time it was GA, followed by 3 days in hospital then 8 weeks of exercises after dressing was removed .... all sorted. My understanding is that today it is more likely to be done under a local anesthetic. However, that's all I know.

My thanks in anticipation.

John

Hi, i had a half knee replacement in 2021 and am due the other one doing later this month . Yes, where they can, they do the op under a spinal injection with sedation. If all is ok, you can go home the next day... i did :-) First physio appt is 2 weeks later. They say 4-6 weeks for the basic recovery, but i was discharged at the first physio ap as i had full range of motion and could walk without crutches for a reasonable distance. I was driving (a manual) again at 4 weeks.

Hope this helps xx

Hiya springersrule,

Thanks for that. Obviously techniques have changed significantly compared to when I was ‘dun’ back in 2015. I was around 8 weeks before driving my manual Micra, and 11 weeks back at work driving a bus. Thanks.

Your welcome. It does help if you're used to joint replacements, I have 2 hips and will shortly have 2 knees to go with them. The latest hip, done in 2023 turned into just an overnight stay too :-) xx

I don't know if this will be any help, but my husband has knee pain and following an x-ray has been referred to orthopaedics.

Someone he knows has told him that he had a similar problem and had stem cell replacement therapy. He said he only knew it was an option because someone had told him about it, he wasn't offered it on NHS. He also said it's the best decision he ever made. Obviously he had it done privately and it cost £800.

We're waiting to see what the orthopaedic consultant says but it's worth thinking about.

Hi and sorry the dreaded knee is an issue. I have a new left knee and never had any problems BUT I take buckets of tablets for damaged spine. Once the left knee is done the other knee tends to take a bit more. If there is no problems then off you can toddle. It is nice to know the cause of the existing half knee as if it is arthritic/rheumatic then you are entitled to some info as I had left done 5 years ago and right full knee is up soon. I had an MRI to highlight the cause so that should be done and if it has you need the outcome. Knee replacement is a fantastic success considering I have a 7" scar for a whole knee- hate to think how much tugging and stretching goes on BUT, as my mum is a Matron in charge of A&E in Leeds for 40 years but is involved across the nursing staff and 'knees' are a 95% success rate and now done earlier so it is better, where possible to NOT wait until we are 90 - enuf said. Good luck & sure all will go swimmingly. David

we are all so different with our pain tolerance.

I have just had my second total knee replacement. Did have spinal injection and was discharged five days later. I am 80 and do think this makes a huge difference.

Pain is an issue and slowly diminishing but still severe especially at night.

I have found my surgeon to be very dismissive but I think this is the norm. Once they have operated they are not interested in you. A sad reflection on todays world.
