this sounds trivial im sure but woke this morning with extreme pain in middle finger in left hand, both hands hurt bad every morning , pain decreases a little through day, so has to be arthritis, but this mirning pain in middle finger on moving or trying to staighten sends me through the roof, tried running hot water on, hasnt helped much, I remember at times this finger seemed to almost lock at times, I live alone and have to be able to do all my household chores, this morning cant manage to do hardly anything that requires two hands, any suggestions to relieve this pain?

Sounds like it could be trigger finger. When I’ve had it, eventually the pain increases to such as extent that whole hand feels painful. Suggest you go to gp to have it looked at. IF it is trigger finger it is usually treated with a steroid injection which is surprisingly effective.

hi, sorry about finger pain, it’s awful. I have had several trigger fingers that I use soft splints at night. They have healed on their own but each took nearly a year. The splints will save you from the morning pain. I also sleep with compression glove on my “good” had, really reduces morning pain. Shots are an option so is surgery. Check with dr. to make sure it is trigger finger. Hope it feels better as day goes by.

Oh thank you Sugaree, that sounds terrible, Ive just had the one, deem to want to lock once in while but this morning was excrutiating, cant imagine how you cope with all fingers, both hands have been stiff and painful in morning, does ease a bit through day but still not completely gone, what did dr say causes fingers to do this, is it arthritis too, ai have osteo in back and hip, and rheumy is sending me for hand exrays

I think it’s related to osteoarthritis. I have it my back, neck, knees and hands. The compression gloves are excellent for sleeping but the trigger finger needs a soft splint. I read that the more often the finger gets stuck the more damage. I look ridiculous at bedtime with my splints on one hand and glove on the other, a pillow between my knees for sciatica and sometimes compression socks for arthritis in feet. Old age has not been kind lol.

I have something similar in my left hand. Do you have any kind of support, like a splint for your wrist? I did have and still do have problems with my wrist and I'm sure it runs up to those middle fingers. At times my whole hand feels stiff. I think it's arthritis, too, but there's no cure, is there? All we can do is take/rub in pain killers and wear supports.

I do have a wrist support, had carpal tunnel surgery few yrs ago, have been reading up on trigger finger, suggest wear soft splint on finger at night time, has something to do with tendons in finger

I'm just glad it doesn't "trigger" very often, and I am now retired as a violinist. I still think it comes from the wrist, as I had some pressure points in the palm of my hand that were very painful when pressed (does anyone else have this?) I'm really too busy now to follow up something that might just be another symptom of fibromyalgia.

Oddly enough, when I pressed on fleshy part of hand just belobaby finger and just above wrist, it did hurt, so massaged it fir few mins, think helped a bit, ther s also something called dupitrenes contracture, not sure of spelling, but some symptons seem to be what I am experiencing,?

Yes, some years ago, while it was just the wrist, a consultant I saw said it might be that - however it's spelled.
