Hi I’ve been told to take 2x500mg Flucloxacillin 4 times a day for 5 days as I have an infected toe, is this too much? it’s 4000mg a day? I’m sure my doctor wouldn’t give me something that wasn’t safe but with severe health anxiety I’m worried incase this is a huge amount. Any advice would be appreciated

Hi Gehe31xo. If you look on Google it does say that is the usual dose so don't worry 😊 xx

I’ve looked but the only ones I’ve saw is it saying 500mg 4 times a day, I’m taking 1000mg 4 times a day so was pretty worried incase it was too much, thank you though I get so panicky over this stuff xx

Why don’t you speak to your chemist if you are worried. They will be able to advise you. However am sure that if they had concerns they would have flagged this up when gp prescribed medication.I would speak to chemist who have best knowledge about drugs.

It's probably a higher dose to get rid of the infection and not risk it spreading from the skin and to the bone which can happen with toe infections. Bone infections are notoriously difficult to get rid of. A short sharp higher dose means less risk to your entire toe. 1g 4 times a day is the appropriate adult dose.

Hi, I looked in the bnf, the British national formulary, which is the prescribing guidelines for doctors in England, it says that for an adult flucloxacillin can be given 500mg-1000mg 4 times a day. So it is within the limits.

mg aren't constant in tablets and vary from medicine to medicine. This is the normal 6hrly dose for a definite infection. 250mg would only be used for a very mild infection or a child.

"mg aren't consistent in tablets." Not sure what is meant by that?If a medication says it contains "x" amount of mgs I am sure it does. Otherwise the drug companies would have big problems. Not to mention the litigation for prescribers and administrators.

What I meant is that 5mg of one compound or chemical in one tablet eg for the heart, may work as well in its way, as 500mg in a different tablet used for something else eg antibiotic.

Hello I am new to the forum but not HU.

I was on this exact dose when I developed infections on my big toe and ring toe that seemed to be the result of Covid Toe! This is quite a usual dose for foot and toe infections as being at the extremeties a lower dose may be ineffective. The dose can adversely affect gut bacteria so probiotics like yogurt (check the label) and sauerkraut can be useful.

1g 4 times a day was and still is the correct dose for skin infections. We can't give medical advice but if it was me I would happily take it. It's the correct dose that I saw given for years when I worked in the medical profession. Make sure you take it an hour before food as instructed. In future probably best to discuss queries with a pharmacist as they know everything there is to know about meds. Get well soon.

I’m on the exact same for the exact same issue and I’ve been terrified too about the whole is it too much but I think as long as I leave six hours between it then I’m fine
