I have taken ,10 grams per day for 2 months successfully, for neurological pain in my legs. Now suffering noted side effects. Can I still get benefits from reducing dose?

I use a pill cutter to cut my 10m amitriptyline into 2. Some nights I manage on 5. If I’m still struggling after an hour or so to sleep I take the other half. I reckon all the amitriptyline does is knock me out , doesn’t take away the burning and tingling. Hate the side effects, troubling dreams and constipation.

I manage on 5m o

Thank you, Mine is the headaches, and the rest - an amazing thirst! My chemist wouldnt same, my GP vague - try and see! Must depend on individual reactions I guess.

Not found GP very helpful, don’t get headaches but awful dry mouth and thirst. Have tried lots of other things. Pressure socks seem to help. Soaking feet in cool water just before bed can help too. Use a massage mat for feet once a day- got mine fro Amazon about £25. Am taking apple cider vinegar tablets and magnesium - don’t think they help much. Have a huge tub of aloe Vera gel by the bed - it helps to cool feet and legs during the night. Would like to see a neurologist really.

Think it depends on individuals response and doesn't work for everyone. Also similar drugs such as nortriptyline which I'm on and which have similar effects just doesn't knock you out so much but dry mouth is still an issue. I needed much higher dose to get it to work so worth going back to GP and asking for change if not working. Think 10mg is smallest tablet size although as it is originally an anti depressant which takes time to build up in body may be able to do a 10mg every other night. I was quite skeptical about it but does seem to make a difference even though needed much higher dose than at start. Max strength for pain relief is I believe 75mg.

Oddly my side effect symptoms only started after 2 months, of taking the 10- although I felt the effects within days - greatly reduced nightly spasm's in legs and being able to sleep at night was great,However the new effects include daytime drowsiness. I try to maintain a regular timetable - get up at 8, lunch at 12, dinner at 6. But now in between waves of fatigue -where I have to rest for a couple of hours- that maybe something else of course.

Just wondered how effective the 5 would/could be.

I have been using amitriptyline for many years and know it can effect people differently if they change their amount prescribed.my advice is to phone your doctor.
