Gynae appt

Hi everyone,

I have a gynaecology appointment on Thursday to discuss the possibility of endometriosis, I’ve never really seen a gynaecologist before and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect? I assume I will have a physical exam but will the doctor want to do an internal exam? I have PTSD related to a sexual trauma so I just would like to know in advance, thanks.

I would say pretty likely you will need an internal exam and possible transvaginal scan, there will be a nurse present especially if you are seeing a male doc. Good luck

Thank you, I’ve had that scan twice before so hopefully won’t need another one!! X

When seeing a new doc they do usually want tests and scans done again so they have their own up to date results, a lot can change plus the skill of the sonographer or doctor can give different results. My Gynae does a new scan every 6 months to check for any changes so it's ongoing surveillance as well as a diagnostic procedure.

Hi Amy. It must be a bit of an anxious time for you. As Amy said you will need an internal exam . Before that you will go through what your symptoms are and your past medical history, That gives you a chance to explain about the sexual trauma. Whilst it's in your best interests to have an internal, if your not ready, just say so. A nurse or health care assistant will also be there. You could ask to speak to the charge nurse when you get there and explain to her. She can then have a word with the doc before you go in to see them. Good luck with it all.

Hi, as an endometriosis sufferer, I had a few internal exams while my diagnosis was being made but if Endo is already strongly suspected, you may not have to have one, as the only way to properly confirm it is with a laparoscopy, so it may not be an issue. Perhaps you could try calling ahead and asking to have a chat with someone who could tell you what to expect, at least then you’ll have advance warning. Hope all goes well 🙂

I’ve been under investigation for a few things, some signs point to endometriosis and some signs point to completely different things. Thank you for your help x

Amy, I wish you good luck. Be brave and be honest. Listen to your gut. You’ll know if the doctor is taking you seriously or not. I say that because I’ve found gynaecologists to be dismissive of women and I think they often think we’re just being dramatic. If you need a second opinion, don’t be afraid to see another specialist.

BTW, what are your symptoms?

Thank you for that, I have severe stomach pain constantly. Really heavy periods with severe pain and a family history of endo. However I have symptoms such as increased bowel movements, intermittent diarrhoea and constipation, blood & mucus in stool that point towards a gastro issue. I’ve had a colonoscopy, about 4 ultrasounds, tens of blood tests and a CT scan that all come back fine! Such w pain in the backside x
