Thanks for your post. Really sorry to hear that you are experiencing this pain, and it is affecting your wider personal life too. It is good you are having this looked into with your doctor, I would also suggest perhaps trying to get a specialist to look into this as well as your regular GP, as the below post has also suggested. This may be more beneficial in pinpointing what is causing the pain. It may be more difficult to arrange this in the current circumstances, however it is definitely something to try and arrange and you could have an initial consultation over video etc.
To try and help with your depression and the pain affecting your personal life I would suggest some of the resources on our website which help with coping with pain in your everyday life. Although pain can often take over your life, it is important to try and prevent this as much as possible through mindfulness and self management. The main idea is to use these techniques in order to try and carry on with your normal life as much as possible, as if you were note experiencing this pain. I have linked it below, where you will find podcasts and articles to help with coping and breathing techniques etc.
Usually it is diagnosed by a physical examination. It wouldn't show up on an x-ray at all, and would be difficult to see in an MRI if it could be seen at all. And yes, it can go on for some time. It is like a sprained ankle only between your ribs and your breastbone, and a sprained ankle can take a long time to heal. Additionally, what ever caused it in the first place, perhaps poor posture, could keep happening. Have you had any physiotherapy?
I have that also, it is when the joints become inflamed causing pain, it can give you pains that sometimes mimics a heart attack But like all chest pains you should get medical help, ASAP. I’ve had this for around 25 yrs, it hurts it’s worrying and GP or A&E.
My pain is continuous since 2 years, I followed up with doctor for pain who gave me Lyrica and tegratol and small dose from tramadol when need, I was OK the pain didn't disappear but became better with 60% I stopped all the medications since 2 months and pain came back more worse than before and I became in really depression from it, I can't sleep and I can't live my normal life, the doctor didn't tell something specific he told me you have chronic pain in your intercostal..... So I never know what with me exactly and how to go out of this, if this chronic pain as per doctor it means I will take all these tablets every day, before I took 8 tablets per day for 7 months and I am 32 years, have family and children, now I follow up with psychology doctor and his medications made me like zombie and I lost hope in life and I am not better..... I don't know what solution and with whom I must follow and what with me exactly
Hi again, you can get pain every day for however long, if I might say, I think a rheumatologist may be a better type of dr, one who deals in your field of specialist. I’ve been through hell like yourself. Some Drs seem to think it’s all in your head and over the years I almost believed him, I was a mess lol it I then demanded I go to a Rheumatologist, things were changes every where in my care for the best. I carried on feeling good and the pills were working and over the coming years things would get painfully and talking to my Rheumatologist found lots of different illnesses RA Dementia COPD, DIABETES, Fibromyalgia plus more, I went to see my GP, because my ankles were swollen lol and she gave me morphine patches and I’d never knew what they were a lot of my pains I’m still on them now. Please don’t be scared to speak to you Dr, mine said not the one I got the patches from, oh well it’s your fibromyalgia and I said no it isny
It’s not because it was something else then we sorted things out more pills and I’m on 40 pills a day and 5 injections lol but I keep smiling lol so if the pills and what have you have works then don’t change them lol. About 2/3 yrs ago this Dr said to me, How is it your your still alive lol, it was funny lol. Keep on keeping on.
Thank you Philip so much for your support, I really was good with medicines but I all time speak to myself that I am still young and I will not live all life take pills so I stopped it and pain came worse, I really will come back to my first doctor at least he has the solution to relief my pain till I we find another alternative solutions for pain, my main problem not in pain, my main problem is about thinking in pain and how much bad ideas jumps inside my mind, thinking 24 hours about pain make it really increase and increase so much, I have to work in parallel with psychology therapist to over come this thinking because I really can't control myself and control thinking about pain which makes the pain more bad and bad until depression
It could be costochondritis as mentioned above but normally that does not last as long but as Philip shows it can last many years. I would have thought a musculoskeletal specialist is the way forward. I had something different but a musculoskeletal specialist set me on the fast track forward. If it is costochondritis they are just the right person to see. Look around for a good one and he will give you special exercises to do after evaluation and if improvement is seen will then refer you to a physiotherapist.

GP’s often don’t believe much in musculoskeletal specialists for some reason. But in your case I think it really fits the bill. I would give it a go as costochondritis is typically muscle pain where it attaches to bone. They know a lot more about musculoskeletal issues then your GP or a chiropractor ever will. Give it a go.
I have sufferd chest pain for around 2yrs ,a had 1 GP say it was anxiety related which a new was ridiculous to be honest ,then 2nd GP fought it was costochondritis aswel, personally speaking I felt it was 💓 related so was 3rd GP that kind got the ball rolling an referd me to cardiologist in which a got 24hr tapes did twice,CT scan plus MRI scan on the same day, in which came back had COPD which still didn't take any pain away from chest plus heart rate is always below 60bpm which say I've bradycardia,an STILL 99%SURE HEART IS OK to which I think is totally wrong, before everything started to close an appointments due to covid I was due to go into hospital to have dye put thru my 💓 which as say cancelled,it restricts my daily living,I'm basically waiting on appointment again for this MRI,I personally feel MY CHEST PAIN IS RELATED TO MY HEART,AN YET A FEEL AS IF I HAVE GOT TO WAIT ON SOMETHING TO HAPPEN,SOZ FOR THE BOOK🙈🙈😉,I'm prescribed 30mg diazepam daily for anxiety for something totally different thats reason a no my chest pain was nothing to do with anxiety, I've seen me even take gabapentin or pregablin for pain but stopd it as still 100% it's my 💓 an not just chest,I hope you can get to bottom of ur chest pain/discomfort...

I get anxiety daily and it can be life changing ,as it has been doing to me, this next bit lol if I drove to big carpark up the ramps type, I can’t do now lol, if I go under a low roof and I get anxiety I cringe in fear even on telly it’s doing me in, there’s tons of things sets it off and if it does then learn the different things and avoid them if you can, I do online colouring nd it’s saved me tons lol.
I think we all should get to know our illnesses and what we can And can’t do, to help us to find away avoid things. Getting o know what it is and learn to work with it but if you have any goodish Amy’s don’t go mad with energy, tomorrow we might not have any left.
Philip x
It sounds like costochondritis, have you tried anti inflammatories for it? If it’s heart related it should have showed up on an ECG or an ultrasound. Costochondritis can go on for a really long time. Try not to worry to much about it especially as your heart rate is nice and low. Once lockdown has gone I’m sure you will get the investigations to put your mind it ease. Do let your doctor know if the pain suddenly gets worse but hopefully it will disappear on it’s own (mine did)

Cheers a got the dye put thru my 💓 on Tues 11,8,20,jst waitn on results at same time 1 of them said it was fine, had bloods which showed up bit anemic, got bloods taken of GP last wk ,I phone for results 2 be told were contaminated, something to do with tubes used for holding it.repeat bloods Tuesday,so if that's my 💙ruled out can surely only be nerve damage or the Costochondritis, wonder how long will take to be diagnosed
Ongoing pain is horrible and it does get you down. Have you seen a pain specialist? Sometimes an injection (steroid or anaesthetic) might help.
I do know how you feel as I have been struggling with a lot of pain since I was 30.
