Crohn's or Colitis? :-(

For nearly 5 weeks now, I started having severe pain in my lower abdomen that travels around to my back. The ER doctor after doing a CT scan, bloodwork and urinalysis, believes it could be mild Crohn's disease, and to see my GI. I'm praying she's wrong, and that maybe it's just a treatable cyst.

My question is which one is worse to have Crohn's or Colitis?

The clinical definitions of both illnesses are quite different but from all I've read, quite precise in their differences.

I don't know enough about the history surrounding the illnesses and who the crohn person is/was, to know why there are two definitions for what is essentially the same disease (involving a fairly broad spectrum of symptoms).

Either disease is extremely unwise to ignore tho so read a bit more 😊

Thanks Eddsil. I have been reading up on it more myself, and I can see the similarities between the two diseases as well as the differences. Hopefully, it will just turn out to be a cyst in the small intestine that can be quickly taken care of, and the whole matter will be over, done and gone. Well one can hope! Lol :-)

They can only tell by doing a colonoscopy. I have had and again have now colitis. From what I understand though Crohns is worse as it can affect all of your duodenum and colon. Your GP will most likely refer you for a colonoscopy which will provide you with answers. If it is mild then I would not worry too much as it is easily controllable.

Thanks Emma! My sister has Colitis, and from what I understand, IBD can run in families. Figures! Anyway, I'll find out when I see my doctor in a couple of weeks, and for sure he will order a colonoscopy. My most unfavorite pass time (of which he knows from past times "polyps" ugh). At this point, I'll do it without complaint if it means an end in sight for this pain!!!

The real kicker is having to suffer without anything for pain for the next two weeks until I just see him let alone the colonoscopy. Woe is me! Why does he hurt me so?! Lol

Last time, years ago, and again now I have not suffered any pain. Just constant toilet runs, an upset stomach and yukki mucus (tmi sorry). Nothing helped last time until I got prescribed prednisone and that cleared it up. This time I have had the colonoscopy and got the preliminary results but am waiting to see the specialist. Can really do without all this as I am having a lot of spinal problems and have had 3 ops so far. I guess all the stress set the colitis of again. Need to de stress 🙂

I don't see why you don't have a prescription for pain meds. Or at the very least, a high prescription for buscopan/Hyoscine to try to settle things down a little.

You have already committed to further investigation so I don't see why they should be so cautious but I don't know anything about your circumstances/doc to say why with any surity. In the uk, the doc will try to mitigate severe while determining it's sources and I know how unbelievably debilitating crohns pain can be left unchecked.

Pick up the phone again I think...

The problem is he hasn't seen me yet, so he won't prescribe anything until I go for my appointment despite the fact that I did go to the ER and was given the diagnosis as well as a temporary prescription. My doctor is out on vacation now, and won't be back for two weeks. I was told that if it got to bad to go back to the ER.

Surely you can see another doctor? They all run multi doctor surgeries now unless you live in a small village but then there would be another one to cover for him. If they have a walk-in surgery (ours has one every morning for 2 hours) get yourself down there. ER discharged you back to your GP so they need to deal with this.

I had ulcerative colitis for roughly 5 years on and off, and my uncle had Crohn's disease, as for trying to consider the difference which is worse neither is a nice condition, my uncle had removed 6 feet of his intestinal track removed, and continued to manage quite happily after, colitis is a weird one, the first attacks I had caused no pain, however plenty of visits to the toilet, but a year or two later the pains kicked in, and was indeed painful, I eventually managed to get my condition under control with steroids, and over a period of time they were gradually reduced and finally stopped, I've not had an attack for over 30 years I'm living proof that these conditions can settle down, however some folk may have to have a stoma bag, which I believe can be reversed if the condition settles down, its that long ago and I'm not 100% sure if that's still is the case, stress can play a part, smoking and alcohol is another irritant to the bowels and should be definitely avoided, also it can be in the family tree, whilst it's not a nice condition to have it is treatable and all is not lost, there are plenty of various ways to keep on top of it, and all being well you'll get a diagnosis and start on the right treatment, I found having all the various tests stressful and it seemed to take weeks for all the results, try not to Google every symptom as this can get you stressed out, it can get sorted and once your on the correct medication you'll start to feel better, here's hoping for better things in the future for you, thanks.

stomas are still successfully reversible on a case by case basis.
