Osteoarthritis pain: I have pain in my neck... - Pain Concern
Osteoarthritis pain
I have pain in my shoulder and upper arm and went to see a physio. It turned out that the pain was from a problem in my neck which was cascading down the system. She gave me so lovely gentle neck and shoulder exercises to do for the rest of my life. It took several months shift the pain, but now it is under control, and it only comes back if I slack off doing the exercises.
They now say that special exercises are better than pain killers in the long term, so have you seen your physio recently?
Hi,you need to have an MRI scan on your neck to check if you have cervical spondylosis. If you have, then it will most probably be degenerative discs that are your problem. This condition will give you referred pain in to your shoulders. You may also have stenosis which is a narrowing of the spinal canal due to spur bone growth on the verterbraes giving nerve compression.I have suffered with these conditions for over 2 years. An operation is not possible and is too risky.I have been taking 300 mg of Tapentadol opioid painkiller with 60 mg of Duloxetine anti depressant. This combination helps with pain management,Good luck,Francis
I agree with jacklilly241 below on this one. I suffered excruciating shoulder pain for over a year before I had to stop driving ( Cab driver )...the pain got so bad last Christmas I simply could not get up...I was taking 120mg Dihydrocodeine ( DHC Continus ), slow release along with Naproxene 500mg X 2 a day. Never even touched the pain. I was sent for an X-Ray as I had broken many vertebra in my teens but the pain had always been in my Lumbar region as I got older. I was doubtful about the X-Ray showing anything but went ahead as I was totally handicapped with the pain in the shoulder. Sure enough they found real bad Disc Degeneration that was shooting the pain into my shoulder & by that time my arm & fingers were totally numb! Scary Biscuit time lol...there was bone spur growth causing nerve compression...agony so God Love Ya!! I was sent to see a fracture specialist as there were signs of old breaks in the Cervical area, C4 & C5...was given the talk & advised to try meds 1st before any Disc replacement that can be risky but I do a few lads around my age, 47 by the way & another in his early 60's that have sworn by surgery.
Anyhow being a Chicken for surgery lol, I was given a prescription for Pregabalin 200mg X 3 a day & Duloxetine 60mg X 1 ( I take the Duletine in the evening ), & I can honestly say I am back sleeping in my own bed, after almost 2 years on a 2 seater settee, as I had terrible spasms in the Lumbar region too. I still have days when that sharp pain kicks through but I can live with that. I do know there will come a time when I may have to seriously look at surgery but for now I'm coping great.
Now there are a great many people on Forums & Social Media even that are dead set against anyone trying that combination of drugs, ( Pregabalin & Duloxetine ), swearing their lives have been ruined since taking them...I can only speak about my own experience with these drugs & tell you that they have given me back a great quality of life & I am back driving, although not Taxiing again yet, & Fishing with my kid's...Oh & back in bed with my wife LOL...I am on a list to get an MRI & to see the Fracture Doc again but I can wait now for that. The other thing I wanted to mention to you was if you are a Diabetic Type 1 or Type 2 as pain in that area can also be caused by uncontrolled glucose.
I wish you well in your fight but have to add that Tramadol never ever helped me in any way. Dihydrocodeine slow release or DHC Continus 120mg X2, Pregabalin 200mg X3 & Duloxetine 60mg X1...Good Luck...don't leave this & think it will go away as honestly, it can get far worse than you are feeling now. Osteoarthritis is no joke nor Diabetic pain it that area.
I like you have pain in my neck right shoulder, I suffered excruciating shoulder and arm pain, mainly at night, when it would wake me up sometimes I couldn't move my arm, and like you was taking tramadol, I have had a MRI scan on your neck to check if you have cervical spondylosis, came back that this is the case, once when I was having really, really bad pain and difficulty moving arm called 111 who sent ambulance, however after a while the pain subsided and the paramedic told me that paracetamol would work better than tramadol, so I tried it and low and behold this was the case.
I have also been to see a physio, who gave my exercises to do did help a little, but then one night when I bed I and the Mrs heard a loud crack from my neck, don't know what or where it came from, but since then I haven't had the pain so bad, so don't know if a visit to a Neck ‘cracker’ and manipulations carried out by chiropractors would help you.
I have paid out a lot of money over the past two years so far have been to see chiropractor Osteopath acupuncture I paid for was told must of had damage to my neck as a child had a course of physio nhs last year
don't know what it's like in your area but here in Wolverhampton we seem to have lots options available to us,
good luck to you
Mike
Hey Muddle
I know you posted this quite a few months ago, I just wondered, with it being Osteoarthritis related, if you'd joined the OA Action group. That's specifically for Osteoarthritis sufferers.
I have osteoarthritis in my neck, I do exercises on the neck that strengthen the muscle which gives support and helps a lot.
For inflammation, I take turmeric with black pepper in capsule form every morning with breakfast, I am pain free because of it.
Here is a link with exercises that will help manage your pain

Follow the instructions and give them a go.
Thank you very much
