Can an MRI scan miss anything.?

Hi, I'm new here. I have been suffering with an extremely painful left foot for over 2 years now.I have tried and am still using arch supports, I have had numerous GP appointments which resulted in ' keep taking the pain killers' and then was recommended to have physio. When my physio couldn't help I was referred to the hospital. I had an X-ray which came back as normal. I then had an MRI scan of which I got the results for yesterday and that came back clear! I was given a steroid injection in my ankle to help but that still doesn't tell me what's wrong, I'm at my wits end. Does anyone know if an MRI scan can miss anything? I thought it showed everything. I feel an idiot as people have asked me how I got on with my results and I have to tell them they were clear. I have a further appointment in 6 weeks but don'the know what that will achieve.

MRI scans cannot show over contracted muscle. Over contracted muscle is painful and needs to be stretched out. Stretching out over contracted muscle is a painful process but it removes the pain.

It is worth seeing a sports therapist to see if they can help. They should know about the problems of over contracted muscle.

Hope this helps

Thank you, I think this will be my next way ahead if my future appointment holds nothing new. Thanks again.

It could be the ligament that runs from your heel to the ball of the foot. It needs to be stretched. Try using a can of drink from the freezer(but not frozen) and roll your instep over it for 5 minutes 12 times a day. Also use liquid ibrupofen on the affected area which will reduce the ligament pain.

Mill you have my sympathy. I have multiple foot problems including the one you mention. The replies from john and chase are well worth a try - I may beat you to trying them. B.O.L.

Hello, Milly. I would ask to be referred to a foot surgeon, seeing as this has been going on for two years without any improvement. If your GP refuses, can you afford a private appointment at your hospital? It may worth it, just for an initial assessment. Hope everything goes well.

Hi there.... I've have a chronic back condition for several years, I take oramorh and codeine to name but a few! I've had numerous mri's over the years and always saw the same orthopaedic consultant. He told me he could see nothing wrong and that I should seek counselling as it's in my head.... fast forward a couple of years of living like this and my mum was taken into hospital with several discs prolapsed, stenosis, spinal disease etc the list was endless! Whilst my mum was in having both her hips replaced she spoke to her orthopaedic surgeon about the pain I was getting, he told her he would see me as he worked with the guy I had previously seen and I just needed to request to see him not the other one. My very first visit with him, he pulled up my previous mri's ( the ones where the other guy said there wasn't anything wrong) and went through them all with a fine tooth comb, he then called the other guy in from his patient next door and started pointed things out to him. Turns out that just because one dr can't see what is on an MRI.. others can! I had several prolapsed discs, degeneration of the spine, swollen nerve roots ( he was so impressed by the size of one of my roots that he called another doctor in to look at the size of it because he couldn't believe how big it was! ( swollen because of serious irritation) was in the next day for injections and an epidural, unfortunately neither worked and I am now awaiting extensive surgery but the point of my story is to say that just because one dr tells you there isn't anything wrong on the MRI, don't except it! Especially if YOU KNOW YOU are in pain! Different doctors see things differently, I have never been back to the original consultant and the two doctors actually ended up having a heated discussion about me being left for so long and how "negligent" the other doctor had been...... please ask for another opinion ! You're body is reacting because there is a problem somewhere and it needs to be fixed! Don't let them fob you off, you are entitled to see another doctor and get another opinion! what one doctor might see as "nothing" another doctor will be on the same page as you!

I hope you get some answers and that you get some sort of relief from pain asap! Sending you hugs and best wishes for the future xx

Hi Hope 18,

I have read your reply to someone about a MRI result. Is it asking to much for the name of the doctor that read your MRI correctly?

Thank you,

Garabandal
