Hello all

My new crutch has arrived, I gave in and decided to get one

It feels odd using it

Does anyone have any tips on using a crutch?

I would always recommend that you ask a physio to show you how to use any walking aid properly. Its too easy to cause other problems if you use it in the wrong way. Also, its really important to get it at exactly the right height, as again, having it even one notch out can put undue stress in the wrong places. Some areas allow you to self refer to physio, which might be easier than asking a GP to refer. Please get proper advice on using the crutch - you don't want to do any unnecessary damage or cause unnecessary pain (and don't just get advice from someone else, as their particular problems may mean that they have to use it in a different way to you.)

I agree. I have never heard of any walking aid not first being measured for correct height.

I couldn't use crutches and had a wonderful Australian walker which folded for easy transportation. That was measured for my height.

Thanks for your replies, I set the crutch up the same as when I used one a few years ago. Perhaps its a case of just getting used to it again. I will ask the physio at my next pain managment appointment next week :)

good idea. If it feels odd using it, then chances are you aren't using it correctly.

Always get a physio to help you set the crutch up and use it on the right side. I would recommend that until you get the assessment you use it sparingly and on your good side if that makes sense. Crutches can often be handed so check that as well using a left hand crutch in a right hand can be very uncomfortable. Good luck and hope it makes life easier for you.

What is the purpose of the crutch. Many people grip their crutches tightly without realising that this causes the legs to weaken because of spinal reflexes.

A crutch needs as light a grip as you possibly can. Preferably no grip just the palm pushing down.

You need to play with the crutch height so that you can walk upright rather than bent.

You need to look at how the hand touch balance reflexes come into play.

All the above involves investigation so that you can get the most efficient and effective use out of the crutch.

Hope this helps
