Generally speaking you are supposed to use a cane or crutch on the opposite side to your injured or weak limb.

However, if you can I would speak to whoever advised you to use the crutch (nurse, physio, GP etc) and check with them.

It is normally the opposite side as it tends to make you steadier and more balanced with the walking and takes a bit if the weight off the painful side.x

I tend to use my stick on the opposite side which is normal now and then I will use it on the same side if the other side is painful but when you do that you have to remember that you are going against nature which swings the opposite arm to leg that is moving so if your left leg is moving forward your right arm is going forward, there are exceptions where a minority of people swing the same arm as leg.

I tried it out today and using the crutch on the opposite side of the bad knee, felt a lot better.
