Anyone else on warfarin, and bruise/bleed....................

like the devil? Had to ring 111 last w/e couldn't stop a blood clot under the wrist caused by a slight knock. It was a pin prick but couldn't stop it bleeding for over an hour.

To be more than fair, was offered an ambulance as my count was 5.6 earlier, however, felt embarrassed as that day it had gone back to 2.1. what can I do to help stop these clots (caused by a knock that am not even aware of) and apart from putting pressure on the wound am at a loss.

With thanks.

You will be having your warfarin levels checked regularly. What do the docs say?

They just have me go in twice a week at the moment, and juggling the doseage. Just want to know if I can help myself a little better.

After tests for a blood clot that appeared on my toe, specialist said I would have to go onto a blood thinning drug but didn't want me to go on warfarin as it meant I would have to keep going to have tests etc so he has put me on clopidogral. I notice I do bruise at the slightest bump and it takes forever for the mark to go away. I do bleed a bit more when I cut myself ( am hopeless in the kitchen) but nothing I cant control. Good luck, Ann

Thats the problem with warfarin - if its doing its job and thinning your blood, then it will make it more difficult to clot with even a minor injury. However, it could also be that your warfarin blood levels aren't very stable. If your levels are all over the place, even when taking the same amount of warfarin, or you are needing to adjust the dose frequently, then ask your doctor whether there is any possibility of a malabsorption problem like coeliac disease - that could be contributing to erratic absorption of medication. I know I had a lot of problems with malabsorption before I got diagnosed with the coeliac and sometimes meds just wouldn't work at all, and other times I'd feel like I'd overdosed on them because they hit me so hard. All cleared up though once my gut had healed properly.

I've had problems in the past with a small knock breaking a blood vessel under the skin on the back of my hand twice now. The first time it just blew up with a massive amount of bleeding under the skin. The second time, as soon as I realised I had done it, I raised my arm as high as I could and yelled to my partner to get me an ice pack. The combination of keeping my arm raised and still and the ice pack on it, stopped the bleeding from developing anywhere near as much. I think there must be some pretty fragile blood vessels on the back of your hands.

It is a good question to ask your doctor though. They may have some better suggestions.

Appreciate the informative reply, Just hope I don't bang my leg, lifting this as high as possible would be a laugh!

Will ask when next going for a blood test, am unsure what coeliac disease is, can you give more detail please.
