doxil, do it help you?
Start her on 2-3 magnesium citrate a day. They will keep movement in the intestines and she shouldn't get an obstruction. Lower her fiber intake for a while. Drink lots of water, juice, etc...
Obstruction somewhere in the bowel is not uncommon with ovarian cancer - it has nothing to do with the chemo she's having, the Doxil. Most obstructions are just faecal matter which has jammed in a particular place, perhaps because of constipation for little while beforehand, or insufficient fluid intake. Sometimes though, an obstruction is caused by lesions or scar tissue from a surgery, in which case surgery may be necessary to remove the scar tissue, and this may be what happened with your mum. It doesn't mean the doxil isn't working, and she should complete the course of treatment.
I agree with previous comments. I had a few bowel obstructions, they weren't nothing to do with chemo. This time I reduced my fibre intake, anything irritate bowel I didn eat. Now a few weeks on, my bowel has started working again. But still when I eat a couple of vegetables which are high in fiber still bloats my tummy and feel constipated. I try not to take too much fibres for now. ( I am a vegetarian)
For me, chemo made loose movements, but only the day I had infusions. I understand everyone is different, but have chat with your mum's oncologist or support nurse to express your concern?
I started a new treatment June 22nd with elahere and by July 1st I too had a stomach blockage. It turned out to be nothing to do with the treatment. It was a tumor they were starting to treat that ended up blocking the outlet to my duodenum and backed stomach acid up in my stomach as it had no where to drain. In all they drained about 5 liters of acid from my stomach and put in a stent to bypass my duodenum and go directly to my intestines.
I have been following a liquid and then soft diet since mid July and have continued with my treatments without any more adverse reactions. The soft diet can get sort of boring, think diet that they have bariatric patients follow after surgery, but I have had no more issues other than a spot of diarrhea since then. No bad stomach cramps. The normal nausea after the treatment for a few days. I haven't had another CT scan yet but i seem to be having less pain than I did before I started so figure that is a good sign. I just have faith that the treatments are helping and keep soldering on.
Best of luck to you Mom as she continues her treatments.
