Gastritis?

for months now I’ve been dealing with on/ off gastritis symptoms. This week I’ve felt more of the inflammation pain under my belly button rather than the upper stomach. Is this still gastritis? I have also noticed my stomach making more noises than usual. Is this common too? I’ve been told I can try famotidine now as Omeprazole just doesn’t seem to be hitting the spot… should I try this?

Hi, I too am not sure about your symptoms? Omeprazole and Famotidine are taken for acid reflux - are you getting actual acid coming up from your stomach into your oesophagus? If not then I don’t think these are the correct drugs to take, especially when most people are trying to come off them if possible as they’re not good for you long term. Your pain under the belly button in my opinion could be bowel related? Do you suffer from constipation? Is there a bulge that could be a hernia? Where do you live? I’m in the UK. I’d ask to see a gastroenterologist if possible to try and diagnose your symptoms properly. Sorry I can’t be of more help. Good luck. x

Thank you for your reply. My stomach has been felt by GP and they say it feels fine. I’ve had nausea, burping and a pain in the upper stomach on and off for months usually worse when I’m stressed or anxious. The two new symptoms I was just wondering if they are also a sign that Omeprazole isn’t working and should I try the famotidine. It’s so frustrating!

Hi, sorry but I read in your first post that you had pain below your belly button not higher up? If you’re having burping and pain in the upper stomach then I think it could be acid reflux/hiatus hernia. I have both and burp a LOT, and have acid reflux. My pain is more in the chest area. I agree Famotidine is worth a try however they work in a different way to PPIs and actually don’t work as well. Esemoprazole is the strongest PPI (Nexium) - have you tried that? Have you had an endoscopy to look down into your oesophagus and stomach? I think you need one as you need a proper diagnosis really. Do you get a burning feeling in your chest? Google GERD and see if the symptoms match? x

Hi I'm on 30mg lanzoprazole and famotidine 20g which I take before bed. I had gastritis do they put me on 60mg lanzoprazole. I've taken ppis for over 20 yrs and would love to get off them. I'm going to ask the doc if I can try famotidine instead of lanzoprazole in the morning too. Famotidine has been quite good for me. I have to be very careful what I eat, only small amounts now. Anyway good luck 👍

Agree with everything that Poodles said. You need a gastroscopy. A doctor feeling the stomach and saying it’s fine is ridiculous! Shame on him/her. All they are saying is that you don’t have an obstruction and it’s not an emergency. A good idea to get off the PPIs. Long term use can cause oesophageal or stomach cancer and also kidney failure. I have chronic kidney disease from them. They can do a colonoscopy at the same time as a gastroscopy and remove any polyps you may have. They are finding that many people on PPIs are developing polyps which eventually become cancerous. Better to find these things early. Google ‘class action nexium’ Famotidine is an H2 blocker which is safer than a ppi but they don’t work as well. Better than nothing though. Please book your scopes
