Unexplained Gastritis & Stomach Ulcers

Hey! I’ve struggled to find a good community to post this in but hopefully some of you guys can help :) I had an gastroscopy today & they found a bunch of ulcers all around my digestive tract, gastritis & duodenitis.

The issue is, I have no idea what could have caused it! I tested negative for H Pylori, I never take ibuprofen, I don’t drink, smoke etc.

Has this happened to anyone else or have any idea what it could be? Thanks so much in advance!

I'm so sorry you are suffering. I don't have experience with ulcers but wondered if it could be diet related. Foods that are too acidic can cause damage. Hope you find a way to heal.x

I had silent reflux for years, mostly under control with Lansaprazole, but then symptoms suddenly got worse 6 years ago. Was diagnosed with h pylori, which cleared with treatment. However, symptoms of the worsening reflux continued, so was sent for gastroscopy for which I had to stop taking acid suppressing drugs for a fortnight. Gastroscopy showed up a duodenal ulcer, erosions and gastritis - but also confirmed I was negative for h pylori. I had not taken any anti inflammatory medication for more than 10 years, non smoker etc. Further investigations didn’t find any specific cause for my worsening symptoms, and going back on the acid suppressants healed the ulcer and erosions. So that’s where I ended up - increase in acid suppressing medicines, greater care avoiding food/ drink triggers, and no answers as to the cause. Every time I read articles which confidently assert the only causes for peptic ulcer problems as either anti-inflammatory medicines or h pylori (cancer and rare syndromes ruled out by investigations) leave me screaming in frustration. Docs seem happy to have ruled out sinister or curable causes and for me to continue to take high levels of acid suppressing medicine.

This is also my story. Then late last year I found out that years of taking a PPI (Nexium) had given me chronic kidney disease so I was taken off them. The last six months have been hell. I had a gastroscopy last week which showed ulcers in my oesophagus so I’m back on a six week course of PPI to heal them then another gastroscopy. Catch 22 as the PPI will deteriorate my kidneys further. All these medications have side effects better to see a dietitian and go on a more alkaline diet. This is my next step anyway. Keep an eye on your labs. Especially eGFR and creatinine. Also drink lots of water and reduce salt when taking PPIs

Sorry to hear what you've been through. Luckily, despite having been on PPIs for many years now, my eGFR and creatinine levels have been fine. I also reduced salt intake about 18 years ago when first diagnosed with high blood pressure. My latest bloods only show a problem with low iron levels, which I'm seeing my GP about next week, so I expect we'll have a talk about diet then.

Do you take any other medication?

Aspirin can erode the mucosa too …

You may find better relief if you start to eat white cabbage.. or cabbage water… this heals ulcers quite quickly… and rebuilds mucosal linings.

Also consider Slippery elm bark extract… which heals all the way from top to bottom..or marsh mallow extract …or DGL licorice… any of these create artificial mucus and lower inflammation… which allow healing.

Steer clear of cooking oils such as canola… rape… only use olive oil or coconut.

Eat porridge first thing and yoghurts and bananas.. these are good healers.

Get off omega 6 and on to omega 3 foods… sugar is bad for this issue… high meat intake higher acid..and longer digestion.

You may be missing a digestive enzyme or producing too much pepsin too…

I hope you find the cause and get some relief too.
