Hi Dorset 22, I have been having diarrhoea for the last 3 weeks on and off. Saw GP and she wanted a stool sample which the results came back yesterday, I have Hilicobacter Pylori, she said it was probably caused by drinking contaminated water. No idea how she came to that conclusion, still processing the fact that have this bacteria in my stomach.

She gave me Clarithromicin Antibiotics 500 mg twice daily for 5 days.

I already have an endoscopy appointment for the 8th of September as I have been suffering with pain and burning in the middle of my chest (not heart related) for a while. I suffer with GERD and LARYNGYOPHARENGEAL sp REFULX, I also have HIATUS HERNIA-and have been taking Omepresol for years and Gaviscon Advance for a few years, I was taking Ranitidine until it was taken off the market, so they increased my Omepresol from 20mg daily to 40mg. I also have numerous other health conditions to boot.

I can’t seem to be able to eat anything before it goes straight through (sorry a bit too much info). I have today discussed this with my Water provider, (Welsh Water) and they came out to see me and take details. They left me with 6 bottles of water and someone is coming tomorrow (Sunday to take Samples), but they do not think our water supply is the problem.

Will get results within approx 10 days, but advised would probably be sooner.

The only other source of water I have had is from ice cubes in drinks whilst out locally. Other than what is in our food.

The NHS website has information on this.

Did you have sedation when you had your endoscopy ? I have elected for this has I have a bad gag reflex.

Did they give you any information about it or advice ?

Hope the antibiotics help.

Know your pain,

Jan

Thank you for your reply. I have read that a lot of people have this bacteria in their stomach and for some reason it flares up and causes gastritis. You can get it from dirty hands and from eating out too. Don’t know how true this is. I wonder about the water because we have had sewage pumped in our beaches in East Sussex. I first felt realIy ill about 3 months ago. I am now taking Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin 500 and 30mg Lansoprazole twice a day for a week.

I was worried about the endoscopy but the hospital staff were very good. I had the sedative which I had thought left you semi conscious but in fact I must have zonked out after they gave it to me because I woke up in a recovery ward. It must have been all of 5/10 mins. I knew nothing about it.

The nurse gave me the details of what they found, just the HP, and prior to this I had had a letter explaining it and a phone call with a nurse to take details.

I have bought a wedge pillow and take manuka honey, probiotics/plain yoghurt and try not to eat spicy/greasy or processed food.

I wish you good luck and if you want to know anything else, please ask me.

Jenny
