Return of acid reflux and digestion symptoms

After suffering from a continuous period of acid reflux and digestion symptom and taking several different PPIs which made it worse, I had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with Helibacter Pylori and mild gastritis. This was treated with antibiotics and the test was negative after this. I have had a couple of years free of problems, apart from the odd acid reflux issue. I am now experiencing indigestion and discomfort particularly at night. I have mucus in my throat too. I find that taking Gaviscon Advance relieves it but is it OK to take it every day? I'm only taking it at night before I go to bed. I am going back to a bland diet again. My GP is not proactive and I don't feel he has helped me much apart from writing out prescriptions for PPIs which didn't help. I had the previous endoscopy because I requested it. I find this site very helpful and from reading posts on here, I see that silent reflux or acid reflux can re-occur. I also take 10mg atorvastatin and I am using Monopost eye drops for raised eye pressures, could either of these be contributing to my reflux/digestion problems? Any advice please.

After my wife passed in 2022, I began to have severe GERD and turned to Omeprazole for relief but it continued. Did some digging and learned about thiamine's (vitamin B1) role in digestion and magnesium's function to activate it. Both have difficulty passing through the blood brain barrier, however in the form of TTFD thiamine and magnesium threonate they easily traverse. Activated thiamine is essential for the brain and vagus nerve including the autonomic nervous system for gut functions. I have not had a recurrance of GERD. Please research thiamine's function in the gut. In addition, research the anti-thiamine factors. Use a B-complex with it as the B vitamins work better together. Always consult your health care provider before using any supplement.

Thank you. I am taking B12 and will look into B complex. I take a whole group of vitamins and wonder if they help or harm sometimes.

You can take Gaviscon Advance every day.

I wondered because it says on the bottle to refer to GP after 7 days but just wanted to check. Thank you.

Hi, I saw an ENT consultant for acid damage to my throat and larynx and she recommended 10ml of Gaviscon Advance every night.

Thank you. That makes me feel more confident about using it because it really has been the only thing that has consistently helped. I real appreciate the advice on this site.

always leave at least 3 hours after eating before you lie down

Thanks. I do try and do that. Just need still be careful of what I eat and drink and not think I am 18 again. Doesn’t take much to set it off these days. Parties and late meals are tricky.

it certainly has changed my life!!

I don’t think there’s a risk taking Gaviscon every day, in fact I take a lot more than you and have had no problems. Pregnant women often take it so I’d therefore assume it can’t be risky to take regularly. My opinion only though, I’m not a doctor!!

Thank you. I continue to take Gaviscon Advance when I feel I may suffer from something I have eaten. I think it is safer than taking PPIs .
