After previous post, I am taking 2 x 30mg of Lansoprazole and two days in, Acid Reflux is better. Is this too high a dose? I take it morning and evening before meals. Also I am being referred for endoscopy.

I don't think this is a high dose but check with your doctor. What I have learnt with ppi is depending on how sever the symptoms are you need to start with higher does than once acid reflux starts to subside gradually reduce the does to a maintenance level.

I did that with both omeprazole and Dexilant

Thank you that is good to know. I have enough for 2 weeks. I am concerned about becoming too reliant. Expecting an endoscopy appointment. So hope gp reduces amount.

In the beginning i was also thinking the same and was reluctant to taking ppi, fearing that I will become dependent on them. All it caused me was a lot of pain. I learnt the hard way to take the righr dose that will bring the symptoms under control and only then start to teper off ppi gradually. I haven't taken any ppi for 6 weeks now but I know if I have another flare up I will have to take them.

Make sure to be off ppi for 2 week before endoscopy so they can take a biopsy and test for helicobacter. This was apparently causing my acidity although I am now free of this bacteria but the acid reflux symptoms still come back occasionally

Oh I didn’t know you had to do that. My gp is not good at bedside manner or explaining anything. I haven’t even seen him, it’s all done over the phone. Quite shocking really. You have to work to get an outcome. What did you do when you weren’t taking PPI to relieve symptoms?

I take Rennie and or Gaviscon as needed. But best to manage it with diet. No spicy food. Very little fast food. Mostly have home made food that is easy to digest. I also taking a teaspoon of Manuka Honey first thing in the morning. A chemist told me that it helps with healing the damage done by acid to the esophagus. Hope this helps

I have gastritis and currently on Lansoprazole 15mgs twice daily which has given me diarrhoea. I have an Endoscopy in 3 days time and hospital said you don’t have to stop PPIs now before the procedure. I recall some years ago taking Lansoprazole and it causing colitis for 5 months. Diarrhoea can be common with PPIs so I don’t intend to take it for much longer!

I have now stopped the Lansoprazole after taking antibiotics with it as my symptoms are better. The H Pylori has gone. I gradually reduced the dosage and was fine.

Hi. Twice a day is a high dose, but if that's what your doctor thinks you need.

Jumpey profile image

Glad it's helping.I was taking two tablets prescribed by my doctor .I can't remember the dosage but would imagine it's standard.

Dorset22 profile image

Thank you. I will carry on with the dose for the time being. My sister takes 15 mg each day as a prevention as she has had the same problem for several years. She had reflux and has a hiatus hernia

When you have your endoscopy appointment through, check and double check with the department about stopping the Lansoprazole and ask them what you can take to relieve symptoms while you are off it (eg Rennies, Gaviscon?).

They don't always want you to stop them and our hospital blithely told me to stop taking them for 2 weeks when I only had one week to go before the procedure! When I pointed this out I was told not to stop them at all, in that case, as there is no benefit unless stopped for the full 2 weeks. The letter I got told me to stop Lansoprazole for 2 days and when I got there, the nurse admitting me told me I should not have stopped it at all, so it was a good job I got the information too late to stop it anyway!

I have been taking 30mg Lansoprazole twice a day for years.

That is confusing about stopping the Lansoprazole. The letter from the hospital said I could have Gaviscon and stop Lansoprazole for two weeks before Endoscopy so I hope I can cope with that. I’m going to reduce the Lansoprazole to one next week and hope I don’t get too many problems.

Hi.had several endoscopy over the years you do need to stop medication. It makes sense if the meds are suppressing the symptoms they won't get the true results.they needs to see what is happening that causes the reflux

hospital has told me there’s no need to stop taking PPI at all prior to an Endoscopy

I take this dose and have done for 10 years with a brief break which caused me to develop Barratts. Still here and reflux mostly under control

Thank you. I am finding the Lansoprazole is helping me now but I have an Endoscopy booked next month and I have to stop it for two weeks so I am a bit concerned about how I am going to manage as I understand it can be difficult to come off it. I thought I might just take one 30mg in the morning starting next week and see how I cope. Be grateful for any advice on this.

The dose is OK that what I take. The endoscope will find out what the problem is. Hope this helps.

If you take the medication they will not do the scope. You can have sedation that helps.

Thank you. I have stopped taking it and just have Gaviscon Advance at night. Difficult in the evening.

Lansoprazole is a drug that lowers stomach acid and is marketed under the brand names Prevacid and others.

It is used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and peptic ulcer disease.

Similar to other proton pump inhibitors in terms of effectiveness.

It is consumed orally.

Thank you. Pleased to say that since my endoscopy and diagnosis of H Pylori , the antibiotics have cleared it and I am much better. Consider myself to be lucky it was discovered.

I have my Endoscopy in 3 days time and told not to stop Lansoprazole. I have gastritis and have asked them to check for H pylori which I think they do routinely. I will be off the Lansoprazole as soon as I can as it caused colitis the last time I took it!

yes all well with the endoscopy and I’m not taking any PPIs now but still have diarrhoea. Definitely caused by the lansoprazole, even though I only took it for 2 days.

Dorset22 profile image
Dorset22 in reply toTimso

No. I wasn’t but think it could be a symptom of heartburn but best to get it checked out.

I get discomfort top of my back around the bra strap area, it occasionally comes round the front, Doyou get this? It’s like acid indigestion in the back?

Dorset22 in reply toSunset_

I'm pleased to say that I no longer have digestive problems since my H.Pylori was discovered but would advise you to get any problem pain checked out. Thanks.

Sorry to hear that. I did find Gaviscon Advance helped instead of Lansoprazole. Also Manuka Honey and Greek Yogurt. Not eating after 6 pm and avoiding anything acidic.

I am not a doc but have much experience dealing with this drug. You should reduce dose asap and see if you can reduce symptoms to a bearable level taking one 20mg per day. I have been on 20mg per day for last nine months. Acid reflux gone! But unpleasant side effects of dry eyes and mouth. Best of luck dealing with this most unpleasant condition.

I’m taking omeperazole 20mg one a day for 28 days still getting some discomfort in top of my back and some heartburn I wish dr had done a endoscopy before putting me on these
