hiatus hernia and symptoms

have had chest pain mainly behind sternum for 2/3 years. Have oesophagatis as well diagnosed through biopsy. Recent ph swallowing and mamometry testing revealed hiatus hernia. I get acid reflux in oesophagus but don’t get many of the other normal symptoms other than chest pain especially at night that lasts for hours. Cardiac cause ruled out by multiple tests. Anyone else get significant chest pain behind sternum.? PPIs don’t seem to help. Trying big dietary changes .

hi, yes I get terrible pain, usually through the night, lasting anything from 4-11 hours. I have hiatus hernia. The whole of my stomach is in the chest cavity. Least exertion causes lungs to expand only to become squashed by the stomach making me breathless most of the time.

Strangely enough I find rice and yogurt the really big culprits.

Thsnks. Mine is very small at estimated 1.5 cm . How would you describe the pain. Sternum ? Achey and dull ?

My GP keeps telling me I have a very large hiatus hernia which I have had for quite a few years. I take a PPI (now upped to 2) and gaviscon at bedtime. I get all my acid discomfort in my throat, sometimes ears and sinuses aswell as coughing and choking. Get no pain in chest or heartburn, but increasingly breathless. I have a paralysed diaphragm on one side, and heart issues, so breathlessness could be from any or all of them.

Again hiatus hernia needs investigating.Same problem.I had breathlessness, rib pain & ectopics which could have been caused by pressure on lungs & heart by the stomach .

But initial view is it’s only 1.5 cm ( I await full results). So presumably my symptoms are a little unusual ?

Thanks for reply. Hope you get some answers . Perhaps actual sternum pain/ discomfort is not a frequent symptom for most people?

Sorry to read your struggling , do you get fluttering in the stomach to ? I'm getting it in middle of chest into the right side of chest and into stomach , seems like it also goes in my foot also.Like a butterfly or shaking sensations? Pounding sometimes like a big heart beat but it's not my heart

Do you ever get anything like that ?

Robfromwales profile image
Robfromwales in reply toAmyamy12345

Fluttering or what you might say is gurgling in stomach. But it’s the discomfort /ache in sternum in night laying down that’s biggest issue

Amyamy12345 profile image
Amyamy12345 in reply toRobfromwales

Gurling what does that feel like ? Sorry I know we all explain things differently Does it feel like muscle twitching or a vibration feeling like a mobile phone in chest and stomach at all?

Robfromwales profile image
Robfromwales in reply toAmyamy12345

Gurgling I meant . Yes a bit like muscle twitching but that’s not my mind issue. For me it’s the sternum pain

I have had fluttering in chest like palpitations,I think it is the hernia sliding ,I'm using iqoro which has lessened this feeling greatly,it strengthens the splinter muscles ,I have been using it for eleven months but will continue to use it in the hope I can eventually stop ppis

Robfromwales in reply toPinkcatfairy

You and others have mentioned fluttering. It’s not that sensation but ache / dull sensation

Robfromwales profile image
Robfromwales

No I don’t sorry . It’s like a dull sort of ache / discomfort that comes and goes and lasts for hours and hours.

Hi Robfromwales,

I can totally sympathise with you, I have similar issues it mine is called costacondritis which can affect the chest, sternum and ribs which when it starts it feels like your having a heart attack. Please find attached an information on it.
