Hiatus hernia /silent reflux

I have a hiatus hernia and over time have symptoms that come and go. Recently I started to feel phlegm build up in throat and therefore clearing throat, especially in mornings and after eating(mainly after afternoon/evening meal) I have been on x2 Lansoprazole morning/evening. For three weeks now. I feel the phelgm and throat clearing isn't as bad but I still get throat twitches /pressure in neck after eating (only seems to be later in day) I also get throat tightness at night , anyone else get these symptoms at all? I also just wondered how long it takes to calm down totally.

I have acid reflux for 7 years now, also have hiatus hernia and gallstones for 34 years. I also get phlegm that's your body protecting your throat from acid.

That must be horrible having it so long , I should be used to it over the time having gastritis and esophagitis but I don't ,it's awful condition

Yes it's not good. But i have loads of problems, one that is on mind the most is my common bile duct from gallbaldder is 11m instead of 4 they said if it bursts i only have 30 minutes to to get to hospital and get help or the acid will just melt everything

Same symptoms as yourself which come and go. I have recently started Famotidine which, it seems for now, has stopped the build up of phlegm.

I have tried to cut back fat and other triggers, at first I didn't but wasn't getting anywhere, the phlegm still comes but doesn't seem as bad , it seems to be more on my right side of throat ,the soreness that is .

Mines on the right side too!

Yes it is but this forum helps a lot , it comes on very gradually and then lingers for ages , I haven't really had problems for a while , I had Covid in December and wonder if it stirred things up again . I'm currently using the IQoro,on week three ,be interesting to see if it helps!

I'd be interested to know how you get on with IQoro.

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toCatspaws100

Yes I will keep you posted ,I am on week three but said can take up to six months for hiatus hernia, I am hoping it will help !

Hi I have been using the IQoro for over a year. Religiously 3 times a day without fail. After 6 months I didn't see much improvement but now I'm loads better. I will carry on using it for life. It doesn't mean I can go back to eating whatever I want but with the mixture of IQoro and being careful I'm symptom free 95% of the time. Stick with it

Pinkcatfairy in reply toCornwallgirl

Oh thanks for the information, I am glad you feel loads better, I have been doing it as they say ,it is early days still . The phelgm build up and throat clearing has subsided and pressure in neck and chest too , I know that I am on Lansoprazole but I'm hoping the IQoro is helping too, I plan to keep using it as well .

Thats good feedback on Iquoro. Recently diagnosed with hiatus hernia, on top dose of Lansoprazole which I'd like to reduce or stop. Currently working out which foods aggravate the reflux.Did you manage to get Iquoro on prescription?

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply to1Unicorn

I didn't try for it on prescription as I thought that I wouldn't be able to ,so purchased one ,it will be money well spent if it works !

Cornwallgirl profile image
Cornwallgirl in reply to1Unicorn

No unfortunately not I had to buy it but money well spent

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toCornwallgirl

How long have you been using it for and have you noticed a difference?

Cornwallgirl profile image
Cornwallgirl in reply toPinkcatfairy

I've been using it for over a year and didn't see/feel a difference until about month 10. It takes a long time and you have to stick with it but I'm loads better than I was. I hope it helps you too ☺️

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toCornwallgirl

Oh that's good to hear, yes I plan to stick with it

Is the IQoro good for hiatus hernia please? I have seen it advertised, but it does seem very expensive and there are mixed messages as to it's effectiveness on various forums.

thanks

Hello yes I have read good reviews, I am currently on week eight of using it ,they do say to give it six months for a hiatus hernia training when they say to. It was expensive but I took the plunge in the hope that it will help, the science behind it seems good,so I am hoping that it will help

Hi, very interesting you useIQoro..is it helping? I’ve tried it and after a couple of weeks I’ve developed a bump in my face so stopped using it. Probably pulled the wrong way. How is it going for you?

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toJoseyblue

Hello yes I am still using it,about seven and half months now , the lpr silent reflux is better since I started using it ,I have been on and off ppi's which I think didn't help, I would say it is working but I wouldn't say the lpr reflux has totally gone , I think it would if I totally had a bland diet . I intend on carrying on using it as I have a hernia for about twenty years ,so I feel the IQoro needs time to heal it as it has been longstanding. I feel it is definitely helping stop my snoring.

Joseyblue profile image
Joseyblue in reply toPinkcatfairy

Thanks. That’s good to know. I should start using it again..I must have been pulling the wrong way..

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toJoseyblue

It is important to hold your breath when pulling too x

Joseyblue profile image
Joseyblue in reply toPinkcatfairy

so you really think IQoro works? I suppose it’s the mussels training..I’ve had Stretta procedure but it help only for a year or so.

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toJoseyblue

Yes I feel that it is working, I still l feel it is work in progress ,I say that as I'm not totally symptom free but feel the symptoms have subsided since I first got them , what is Stretta procedure?

Joseyblue profile image
Joseyblue in reply toPinkcatfairy

They insert a wand type of thing with needles into the gullet, bit like acupuncture..to enhance the muscles..not on NHS though.

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toJoseyblue

Oh I hadn't heard of that , I have also purchased slippery elm ,heard good reviews of that too ,thought I would try that alongside the IQoro

in reply toCatspaws100

I've just change from Lansoprazole to that too and seems to be helping even although I've only taken two.

gillsky8 in reply toCatspaws100

What is Famotidine please ? I have a lot of phegm as well

Catspaws100 profile image
Catspaws100 in reply togillsky8

Hi, it is an acid reducer I take one in the evening and an omeprazole in the morning.

gillsky8 profile image
gillsky8 in reply toCatspaws100

OK so is an alternative to omeprazole as this is interesting the GI consultant did mention there were other options going forward from ppis thanks for your reply.

Joseyblue profile image
Joseyblue in reply togillsky8

It’s like Ranitidine which was stopped. Works as ppi but uses different pathways.

Yep had this a lot off and on, especially in the last 2 years. I have seen various specialists. One advised taking Gaviscon Advanced at night ( in addition to the omeprazole I take) which seemed to help a bit. It wears off but not completely. My main effort is to lose 2 or 3 stone which I'm told may help.

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toHikingfan

Yes I think the gaviscon seems to help before I go to bed

Beanlover profile image
Beanlover

Have you tried Gaviscon after meals, and before bed. If you feel it more in your throat, I was told Gaviscon is more likely to work. It sits on top of the food in the stomach and stops the reflux.

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toBeanlover

Yes I have read that too, yes I have and it does seem to help, I feel that the throat issues seem to be subsiding more ,so hopefully clearing up gradually, I am on Lansoprazole and doing the IQoro week four starting.

Hi there, i was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia yesterday (following a gastroscopy procedure). Have been coping with loss of voice (muscle tension dysphonia) and all manner of reflux related symptoms that appeared out of the blue last 3 months (i posted on this a few weeks ago), including feeling of a volcano erupting in my throat, oesophagus and stomach, sensation of a lump in my throat after eating, repeated throat clearing after eating, occasional swallowing hesitancy. Thought I had Laryngopharyngeal reflux, and still not convinced I don’t have that based on all my symptoms. I did the PPI twice daily, low acid diet, sleeping on a sloped bed, Gaviscon Advance after every meal and ladt thing at night. All in all, I felt very very unwell whilst trying to maintain thst regimen (lost nearly a stone in 6 weeks). So I dumped most of it about two weeks ago and feel slightly better. I slso came across and purchased the IQoro device and have been using it as prescribed last three weeks. Don’t know if it works or not but will persist with it for as long as possible. Not sure what next steps are. I’m also awaiting the biopsy results from yesterday’s gastroscopy.

Sorry to hear you are going through this too, I am on the tail end of prescribed ppi's, although some symptoms seem to have subsided ,I still have ongoing issues. My throat clearing seems to have subsided but normally after my main meal later in day I get some discomfort, pressure neck area and ear in right sometimes feels full. I am on week six of IQoro, I believe it takes some time to take effect . I don't want to continue with ppi's longer than I have to but they don't seem to totally clear the problem. I took have a hiatus hernia and only rarely have I had flare ups . I didn't have the throat issues before the ppi's just a bit discomfort around diaphragm area but since on tablets the throat issues arose !

gillsky8 profile image
gillsky8 in reply toColumbo70

I had Gastroscopy a few weeks back as I have hiatus hernia and gastritis. but they also queried if I had Barretts oesophageus which is in the family Biopsies came back to say not thank goodness but the hernia and reflux ongoing. What dosage of ppi are you on pleas? I am on esomeprazole 20mg. At one point the doctor had me on 40mg twice a day !! but I have cut back to what is manageable 2 x 20mg. and I also use Gaviscon advance.

Hi, interesting, how is it going with IQoro? I’ve used it a couple of weeks and several bump in my face.

I can definitely relate, for the last two weeks I’ve been feeling like there’s phlegm stuck in my throat and it’s driving my crazy! I managed to ween myself off PPI’s but started to take them again over the weekend, I’ve not seen any improvements yet.

It’s a very worrying symptom which always makes me think the worst! I hope yours improved

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toBirch-silver

Thanks yes,the throat clearing and phelgm took ages to subside ,after that had different throat ,ear symptoms,it has hopefully subsided alot but not totally gone, hope you feel better soon

How are you now ? I’ve not long been on Lansoprazole (1 week), but the mucus in my throat is driving me crazy ! Although the acid has gone. I have a months worth of medication. I have never had acid or heartburn in my life, yet become chronic quick ! Doctor believes it’s down to all the stress and anxiety I have had recently.

Pinkcatfairy profile image
Pinkcatfairy in reply toShezsa1

Hello yes I am still on medication, Omeprazole now twice a day ,the mucous throat clearing did subsided ,I think it is lpr , I find certain foods will still give me throat symptoms but not the constant phelgm build up ! I think it is a long road until things totally clear up, I think mine started after covid, I do have a hernia but in the past has rarely caused any problems. I do hope your symptoms eventually clear up , unfortunately I don't think it isa quick fix with these things
