Constant nausea

Hi hope all is wellI was wondering if anyone has any advice for teenager with Gerd.

My son has been diagnosed with Gerd and is on 20mg Omeprazole daily which is not always helping. He wakes up feeling nauseous and struggles all day feeling sicky in his throat. His diet does contain quite alot of trigger foods but as a teenager it's hard to change everything he eats as he is a fussy eater.

He finds it helps if he eats a biscuit to take the nausea away but this only brings short time relief.

Anyone suffering from this constant nausea feeling with Gerd and any advice please that may help to relieve it. His never been sick but just feels it I suppose from the acid that Gerd causes but it is daily and we would love it to go or be less often.

I have had GERD for years. I don't feel nauseous much but have other symptoms. The only thing that helps me is cutting out trigger foods and I think that will be the only thing that helps your boy. Worst trigger foods are chocolate if you could eliminate that that's a start. Anything acidic too. I know it's hard myself so it's even harder as a teenager. Also try elevating the head of his bed. I've rolled up a duvet and put it under the top of the mattress. They advise putting something under the bed itself to elevate it. I hope he can get some relief but I think without looking at his diet and changing it he maybe won't. Hope this is helpful

Thank you we have a pillow for Gerd at the moment but raising the bed underneath is a excellent idea. His medication has now been changed to lansoprazole morning and evening 15mg I do hope this helps as Omeprazole didn't really do much. His diet is a work in progress as it's very difficult as he doesn't like alot of foods and doesn't drink alot of water either he likes fruit squash which isn't the best choice with gerd.

We are slowly trying to encourage him to try new healthy foods and avoid pizza and sausages. His just tested lactose intolerant so dairy is being left alone now too.

Fingers crossed this all helps going forward.

He could try adding Gaviscon Advance. Diet and lifestyle is probably the answer.Dr.Jamie Kaufman's book Acid Reflux Diet is helpful .Cutting out alcohol if he drinks would be good.Is the Omeprazole the cause of the nausea?

Hello.....I was diagnosed with post infection IBS and GERD. Yes I have nausea at times from the GERD as it is ordinarily not an ibs symptom. I drink water, eat saltines, have ginger and peppermint candles when I feel like nausea. I also keep Mylanta, and Tums and even pepcid in the house for when needed.

Hope this helps.......must know and watch trigger foods. Also I was on Omeprazole 20mg once a day for 90 days and it is not a cause of nausea.

You're welcome......not candles, ginger candies,..... Amazon has them or any equivalent drug store. The ones I have are called belly comfort.

Hi. First of all ask the GP to test him for Helicobacter as quiet often this bug is responsible for GERD like symptoms

Secondly diet control (eliminating spicy, oily and fast food) will go a long way to bring GERD under control. Usually the food listed above makes our stomach release more acid to help digest them so if you have GERD then you are making an inflamed stomach work harder which will not help with the symptoms.

Finally Omeprazole is not the best drug for GERD in my opinion as it did not do as much for me as pantoprazole 40mg did. Ask doctor to prescribe pantoprazole 40mg once a day for when he has flare ups and 20mg as a maintenance dose. Keep Gaviscon Advance tablets to hand and have them as needed.

A combination of the above should help but diet is key to long term success.

Hi Thanks for all the advice it is strange that you say about certain stomach infections can cause Gerd related symptoms as I and my daughter both have stomach issues ongoing for the last few years now and although we have been checked for lots of things I have always wondered if this all came about to us due to some kind of infection and unfortunately it's not been found or these are the post infection issues we all face due to whatever it may have been.My son's medication has been changed today to lansoprazole 15mg morning and 15mg evening hopefully this will help as Omeprazole wasn't helping much.
