before my op my alt was slightly up at 45 doc said should be less 35. Well mentioned to anaesthetist as instructed he said and I quote " that's nothing it would be 75 after a week end drinking" what do you think of that? And we worry!

Mine used to vary between 30 and 65 when I was drinking, now I don't drink it's usually under 25, sound's like the doctor is telling you the ideal for a healthy person who limits his alcohol intake and the anaesthetist was just trying to reassure you prior to knocking you out! x

hello Gina,

I had this prior to RA when I was expecting, went upto around 60 and was taken in for tests (I did also have some pain in my side), was eating healthy ect but they said it was due to internal swelling but never found where it came from (haha apart from the baby elephant I was carrying) once it settled at 40 they were happy again. They said if I wasn't pregnant then they wouldn't have been so concerned. They also checked for hepititis.....

as Beth says, sounds like they were trying to reassure you.

Been thinking of you, hope your feeling a bit better, have been meaning to PM your about the movies, usb thingy and books but Amy keeping me busy! x

Hi Gina, there is an earlier blog about increases in ALT. on the site.

Mine at its highest was 47 which was when I was first diagnosed in 2008, earlier this year it was 38 and recently has been fluctuating between 18 and 26. No one seemed worried about the higher levels so I stopped worrying! As long as it is below 50 u/l no one seems bothered.

I suppose the worry of the op could have increased it slightly but you can be sure you will be well monitored and any concerns will be sorted out quickly.

Hope you are feeling a little better. LavendarLady x

MY Monitoring book says women below 35 but it says up to to twice the normal range is acceptable ie( up to 70!)

Mine is is 14.. but I hardly drink xx

35 is the value not the age lol !

Mine averages between 9-11 and I have a glass of wine (just one!) most days! The highest it's ever been was 18 (once). Guess we are all different and it's probably more the jump if it suddenly increases from your personal norm...

Hi Pam, when you are taking methotrexate or anti tnf, your liver function is monitored carefully to ensure your liver is handling the meds. The ALT is one of the LFTs liver function tests. That's as far as I know anyway, lol we are all lap top ,iPad docs here!
