ToeNail fungus treatment and Methotrexate

I’ve recently been recommended Curanail by my footcare practitioner for a toe nail fungus condition.

I wondered if any one has used this while taking weekly methotrexate, and sometimes Naproxen. My blood test results are all fine and RA is well controlled atm.

Looking at the instructions it can take up to a year to work,so altho it’s only applied once a week that is a long time to be using it.

I cant find any contra indication info on line so wondered if anyone had experience/info about this product before I contact the Rheumy nurse to check it out.

With thanks.

It’s probably be quicker to ask your local pharmacist. It’s unlikely to have any effect on MTX as it’s topical but worth checking.

Toenail fungal infections are a b……..r to get rid of. I’ve used Curanail in the past which did nothing and then Emtrix -recommended by podiatrist- which did start to have an effect but after a burst of enthusiasm I then forgot to apply it every night…………..🙄

The only drug which works is Terbinafine as tablets but because it needs monitoring against possible problems with your liver you may find they won’t be prescribed for you on MTX.

If you have any success with Curanail let us know!

Hi and thankyou .That’s all really helpful. Its only applied once a week so not sure if that means I’m more likely to do it or I’ll completely forget 🤣At least with Curanail I can use it with nail varnish so they’ll look better cos it sounds like a long and uncertain road to nail fungus recovery! Thanks again for replying.

You could just use tea tree oil instead. It will still take a year to grow out though. I, and others, have used it successfully.

One drop pure tea tree applied every day. You'll soon see an improvement. Make sure it's 100% tea tree and not diluted with a carrier oil.

Hi there and thankyou.I’ve been using teatree undiluted for nearly a year now and tho there’s some improvement it’s proving so stubborn I’ve decided to give Curanail a go after the footcare practitioner recommended it.Generally I look for a more natural approach to dealing with things initially when they first crop up but I’ve given in on this one in desperation. Thanks again.

Sorry to hear it’s proving so stubborn. I tried at first using cheap tea-free and I was a bit haphazard with the application, using a finger to apply and forgetting some days.

Then I bought a better quality oil with a dropper and was assiduous about flooding the nail bed every morning. It did the trick. Hope you have success with your other treatments. It’s so great when it finally works! Made me so happy!

Especially now it’s summer,in theory, and fungus toes on show don’t look so good!

The dropper sounds a good idea.Like you I was just using a finger to rub some in so maybe just not enough.

Thanks very much for your replies.

I've recently cured my fungal nail with curanail I'm on mtx also and a biologic. However, I used it daily, occasionally forgot, and I got an electric nail file to file the nail down before applying. I didn't file it every day maybe once or twice a week. I had previously used curanail weekly as per instruction but it didn't work.

Hope it works for you.

Hi there the electric nail file and getting a fungal culture are really good ideas so many thanks for suggesting them.Interesting that you only got a good result after daily use.I think I’ll start with weekly applications to see if there is an improvement but if not I’ll give daily ones a go.Thanks again.

Also you're actually best to send a sample of your nail to doctor for fungal culture to get a diagnosis then you might get the tablets. By the time I asked for the tablets they weren't able to culture it. That and a few lost nail samples didn't help. I've now had a negative culture so am fairly sure the curanail sorted it.

Unfortunately I am not able to help. The side effects of MTX became so great that I had to stop it. One of them was shin fungus which I constantly had to treat but just kept returning whilst I was on MTX. Fungal infections are hard to treat. I had a course of Terbinafine but that made me feel really ill. Sorry I could not be more helpful but good luck.

Thankyou for replying and I do hope you’ve found an effective replacement for MTX and something to treat the shin fungus successfully. That sounds dreadful.I’ve never heard of that before.

Thanks again
