Hi, I would like to start taking a collagen supplement but I’ve read some things online about interactions with Methotrexate. I wondered if anyone has had any experience with this? Many thanks
methotrexate and Collagen : Hi, I would like to start... - NRAS
methotrexate and Collagen

The only person who can tell you is your rheumatologist ….never ever take any supplements when you’re on prescription medicine until you have spoken to the prescriber. Boring but True!
I take collagen along with my methotrexate. I had a chat with my rheumatologist about it, as my skin is paper thin and tears easily, due to life long steroids. He said a lot of research was showing good results with steroid patients, and said it didn’t really interact with anything, and our own bodies produce collagen. I’ve been using it for around 6 months, and it hasn’t reduced the effect of my MTX, as far as I can tell. My skin is so much better and rarely tears now
Are you using it for skin benefits or anything else
Skin and health benefits in general, I’m 40 so thinking I should start supplementing the yearly collagen decline .
can I ask which Collagen you take? as on Methotrexate
100% pure marine collagen
Hello, What brand of 100% pure marine collagen do you take please?
Thank you. Are you happy with the ingredients and if they are as natural as possible?
thanks for both of your advice 😌
Sounds like it might be a good idea, but as others say always best to check with your consultant before trying any supplements
I’ve been using Ancient and Brave for ages with mtx and biologics. To be honest, I never even thought about any interactions and nothing has happened. I think!
There's not enough evidence to say whether it's safe, but as it is a food supplement it would logically not be a problem unless you took a lot of it! But check with your pharmacist who can look up the latest information.
I'm not now on methotrexate, and I do take marine collagen. I didn't think it was working but after about three months there was an improvment in my skin fragility and it didn't tear quite so easily, so I've carried on.
I use grass fed beef collagen and wouldn't be without it. I also have a lot of organic beef bone broth. As well as RA I am at high risk of Osteoporosis and in perimenopause when it becomes even more vital to us. Currently only on Hydroxy as I could not tolerate MXT tablets or injections. And the collagen and other supplements I take had nothing to do with it. I have let the rheumatologist know from the start what I take in addition and they are either non-plus or encouraging. I have never had one poo poo it as not being helpful.
The most helpful thing I have found so that you can be clear on what is impacting what, is to make sure that I don't start a bunch of new things at the same time. And I write a symptom and food diary every day so I can track what is going on with me.
I take type II collagen for joint health and wasn't aware of any interactions with the methotrexate I also take. My joints are good so I'm happy 😀
