Has anyone else suffered from nausea when taking Adcal-D3 chewable?
I was wondering if the tablets contain lactose, as I'm allergic to it.
Since having been diagnosed with a fractured L2 and osteoporosis, the RA team and my GP both recommend them. I was taking Solgar Calcium Citrate with Vit D.
Take care everone and keep as healthy as possible.

I was prescribed Ad-Cal and I really didn’t get on well with it. My first calcium and vitamin D was one called Accrete and it made me feel ill, I was then given Ad-Cal which was the same. As I get a lot of dietary calcium my osteoporosis nurse said it would be ok to stop. Ice since learned that there are other forms of calcium that are much kinder for your gut and I now take a little amount of Atlantic seaweed based calcium and I buy my own D3. Unfortunately I don’t know whether or not Ad-Cal contains lactose.
I'll have a talk with the Dr with the Rheum Dept. He's dealing with another problem I have that showed up on the MRI scan on my spine. Thank you for your help.
Lactose is an intolerance as opposed to an allergy. It occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough of the lactase enzyme, to deal with lactose sugars. It can’t cause a life threatening allergy, I’m also lactose intolerant and use AdCalD3 chewable, they don’t contain any lactose, they use sucrose. Most people tolerate, but rarely you can get flatulence, abdo pain or diarrhoea with it. Most seem to settle, but see your gp if it doesn’t, as there are alternatives
yes it made me feel nauseous too and I changed to something else. Speak to your prescriber and let them know how it’s affecting you. The ingredients in it will be on the container so you can check what’s in it 😊
I had problems with the cheap one but Kowa is ok. My nephrologist wrote to GP to say only prescribe Kowa as I felt sick with the GPs one. I don’t know about Lactose sorry.
AdcalD3 contains calcium carbonate, colicalciferal ,plus small quantities of soya oil & sucrose.
On the box, it says to chew the tablets do not swallow them whole.
I took them for years no problems… then my scrip was to changed to SunVit D3 400 unit with Calcium 800mg chewable Tablets Tutti Frutti which tasted disgusting..now I buy the AdcalD myself…. when I remember.
I found I felt nauseous with D3tablets so buy Solgar liquid 2500 one dropper a day and no nausea. It tastes disgusting but no side effects and an excuse to have a bit of chocolate handy!I get it on eBay but readily available.
I was taking calcium citrate +D3 Solgar tablets, no problems. Will check with GP and Rhuem if it's ok to go back onto them. I used to buy them so cost won't concern them! Thanks.
Personally I find any calcium supplement sends me running to the bathroom. It upsets my gut so much that I’m not able to take it at all. I’m ok with vitamin D but just can’t tolerate extra calcium. Hopefully you’ll find an alternative to Adcal I’m sure there are different ones out there. I still haven’t found one.
I also had awful nausea, gas and bloating from the calcium/d prescribed by my doctor - and I also thought it was the lactose in the tabs making me ill as I'm slightly lactose intolerant (it wasn't adcal she prescribed, but something else with calcium carbonate and lactose) But I've done a bit of research recently and have also read that calcium carbonate needs a good amount of stomach acid to digest - so it's not really suitable for anyone on a ppi such as lanzoprazole or omeprazole. The suggestion if this is the case, is to try calcium citrate, which doesn't need so much acid to digest it (I think its made using citric acid/lemon juice in the process) I spoke to my surgery again, saying I can't take calcium carbonate as Im on a ppi, and they told me to speak to the pharmacist, who said all their calcium supplements on prescription use calcium carbonate! In the meantime, I had bought some calcium derived from seaweed, and upped my dietary calcium through eating chickpeas, sesame seeds/ hummus, almonds, broccoli, figs etc and drinking plenty of almond milk. So far so good, stomach is happy again! The GP has now prescribed vit d separately, seeing as I have to self-fund my own calcium. Best of luck! x
Have you had a chat with one of the nurses at the Royal Osteporosis Society?
I found them much more informative than RA team or a GP.
The one I spoke to said too much calcium from pills(rather than from diet) can cause constipation & bloating….then a while later my gastroenterologist said the same.
The following will make older members smile…the gastroenterologist recommended Milk of Magnesia to settle the tummy.
I was given that as a child….no idea why…& I presumed it had disappeared years ago
