ok to take ibuprofen with 25mg methotrexate?

Hi all

sorry to bother. Pharmacist don’t like to say take ibuprofen without consulting GP ( no point for obvious reasons ) and RA consultant appointment not u til April. I think I’ve got hip bursitis, paracetamol not doing anything. Is it ok to take ibuprofen? I’m having bloods taken on Wednesday as part of metho checks so not sure if this will be ok? Any thoughts?

Thanks all xx

I think that you've asked this before and had lots of different responses as, sadly, our medics don't seem to agree. The best thing would be for you to ask your rheumatology team - hopefully you can ring the nurse helpline 🤞

What does your GP say?

Why don’t you ask your pharmacist (not the assistants who work in the pharmacy) they are well qualified and up to date with all the drugs they deliver with.

You don’t need to wait until April to ask your rheumatologist. If you have a helpline you could call that. If not contact your rheumatologist’s secretary and ask them to ask the question for you. Their phone number may be on hospital letters. If not call the hospital main switchboard and ask to be put through to Dr xxxxx’s secretary.

If a pharmacist won't advise then it has to be a phone call to GP or RA team asap. Personally I would not take anything other than paracetamol unless advised to by a medically qualified person.

You have asked this before with mixed responses both my GP and rheumatology say no ibuprofen.

My sincerest apologies, I hadn’t realised , times are hard . I wish you well

No worries but there seems no consensus so your medical team need to tell you what's correct for you.

Hi HappyD34.

My rheumatologist and GP said I shouldn't take ibuprofen. I recently had an ear infection and it hurt a lot so they prescribed me co-codamol and said I could take it with paracetamol but they definitely forbade me from taking ibuprofen and just like when I was in hospital in A&E they said no to ibuprofen.

Cocodamol already contains the full dose of Paracetamol, and should never be used alongside Paracetamol. I was a nurse for 34urs, and this is dangerous and incorrect advice, that could result in liver damage. If they prescribe codeine alone, which is the other component of cocodamol, then you can take paracetamol with it. It’s either cocodamol or paracetamol.

Hi Runrig01.

Yes I know that. GP prescribed me co-codamol which already had paracetamol in it and I didn't take any paracetamol with it but when I was in A&E they prescribed me a different variety to co-codamol and told me to take paracetamol in addition but they told me never to take ibuprofen. Thank you

I’m confused because all types of cocodamol already contain the full dose of paracetamol. I’m concerned your potentially taking more than 1g of paracetamol every 6hrs. Cocodamol comes in 3 strengths 8mg / 15mg / 30mg, all of which contain 500mg per tablet. It doesn’t take much above the recommended dose to get liver damage. I’m just concerned others reading may feel it is safe to mix cocodamol and paracetamol, as it’s not. £10.Unless they advised taking 1 cocodamol + 1 paracetamol, otherwise it’s 2 of one or the other 🤗

they prescribed me at A&E Dihydrocodeine 30 mg and with that they told me to take paracetamol.

That is fine, dihydrocodeine is completely different to cocodamol, and is perfectly safe with paracetamol. 👍🤗

Here is the warning in the BNF re taking them together. As others say you need to check with your rheumatologist, you can do this by phoning the helpline or secretary. It’s impossible for people here to advise, who don’t know your medical history, or what other meds you take, that would influence the decision.

best to ask your Dr - I know I ve taken it with no issue though only for a very short time- a day or so because of injury.

Paracetamol seems to be the one everyone recommends, I spoke to a consultant and she said only take Paracetamol, however I'm not medically qualified as most of us folks on here so ask a doctor or pharmacist.

When I was really struggling with pain my RA nurse told me off for not taking naproxen (essentially Ibuprofen I believe) with paracetamol. She said the warnings not to take it were for long term use - more than 3 months of regular use- or for higher doses of mtx. It's difficult when everyone gives contradicting advice and I still wouldn't take either NSAID for any period of time but have for a day or so when I have had a trapped nerve for example 🤔

Personally I was told no you shouldn't. When I broke my ankle I was taken off MTX and could take both types of pain relief

Good morning ,

3 weeks ago I herniated a lumber disc , currently taking 4.5mg Prednisolone . The GP was great she reassured me and prescribed 2 weeks Lansoprazole 30mg daily to protect my tummy and 500mg Naproxen twice a day She advised taking the full dose for 3 days along with rest and regular ice packs then knock back the medication as able .

Hope you improve soon .
