I am on Methotrexate and Benepali for RA and due to have a cataract op in about five weeks time.

Has anybody who has had similar op and taking similar medication been advised to stop meds for a while.

Hello Pythagoras, you must ask your RA nurse or consultant, please. Good luck with your TKR. Just do your exercises and you'll be walking and bending down much more quickly.I have some advice for you on that. It is a compression sleeve that goes on your leg between calf and hip and also runs ice cold water around your knee etc. It's a bit expensive, but it was really worth it for me. Speed up the full recovery by a lot. You can PM me if you want

Hi I am on Benapali and had to stop for 2 weeks prior to cataract surgery. The op is a breeze and well worth having it done for sure. Amazing results. Good luck.

There seems to be no consistency over this . Oh for consistency !!! Some consultants say no need to stop for any operation , injection etc. It does not provide us with confidence. I always try, if I cannot get answers I am comfortable with, to apply common sense. Common sense says that if meds lower your risk of infection then stop them for a few weeks before and after to give your body a chance . Many factors play a part -age , comobidities other meds taken, BP etc. Learn to know your body and what works for you .

I was on the same medication and didn’t have to stop either before my cataract op 2 years ago.

I’m on Benepali and Methotrexate and was told, when I had my cataracts done two years ago, that it wasn’t necessary to stop taking either. I was given antibiotic drops which I think everyone is.

I've just had my cataracts done. My consultant said there was no need to stop Amgevita and Methotrexate as there is no blood involved. It has been fine

Hi, I am on Benepali and was told to stop it before breast cancer surgery last year (then radiotherapy). I can't remember how long before the surgery I was told to stop it, however. I would ask the RA consultant for advice.

I'm on enbrel and mtx. I had cataract surgery in 2017, I had to stop taking my drugs 2 weeks before surgery and 2 weeks after, only start again if no signs of infection. I think the rules have changed now about stoping mtx. It's best to ask your specialist nurse to get up to date advice.

I hope your op goes well. I'm moving up the list too and am interested in peoples experiences.

I am not on the same meds as you but they are similar, l was advised to stop my methotrexate and not to have my op within 3 months post twice yearly infusion, check with your RA dept to be safe

Thanks for your good wishes. These cataracts have been brewing for several years so I was surprised when the optician said he was referring me. Since then it has been surprisingly quick to see the ophthalmologist and be booked for the op. A matter of weeks.Really looking forward to having clearer sight😊
