Off topic. Poor Sid’s in the sky!

As i’ve said. This is off topic. Not wingeing about my RA today. My lovely, sweet, furry little friend Sidney’s in his little wheel in the sky. He started limping. (Thought he was in sympathy with me!!) 🤣. Then he started swelling up. (Like he was on steroids!) He was nearly 2. Which is quite old for a hammie. (Mind you. I had Rod. He was 3-3.5!) He was finding it alot harder to walk. Couldn’t reach his water bottle. So i was spoon feeding him milky water. Hand feeding him food. He couldn’t use his front paws at all. He was going downhill the last couple of weeks. I knew if i took him to the vet’s. They couldn’t help. So i wanted to give him (& me) more time. Last night the poor boy, shuffled to his loo area. Lost his balance & fell on his back. Legs in the air. I scooped him up & put him back into bed. I knew it was time. I reluctantly rang a vet that i didn’t know was near me. They were lovely. They registered him on the phone. I made an appointment for later today. (5pm). I got there at about 4.30. They were lovely. Saw him straight away. I had a feeling it was the awful c word. She agreed. She thought he had bone cancer. Poor boy. She was glad i didn’t just let him suffer. It wasn’t cheap. £71.20. But i was so glad to give him relief from such pain. He was a very sweet boy. Used to squeak back when i called him. Especially when i gave him a treat. Or fresh bedding. RIP SWEET SIDNEY. You have been loved!

Thanks. I know. It’s sad seeing an empty cage. That’s why hammies/pets are addictive. He was my 7th!! First there was Big Baz, Naughty Nellie, Chaz, Rod (the legend!) Ian, Eric & now Sid. I’m wondering if i can face another one. He would either be Colin, Nevil or Trevor!! Pets are great. They can really cheer u up if you’re not feeling well. I used to let each hammie run around my bathroom. Naughty Nellie was so funny. One night. I had a giant strawberry, She would take it. Then move it. I would move it from her. Very funny seeing a grown hamster trying with all it’s might to roll it along the floor. Maybe i’m having a mid life crisis. But i don’t care!!!

A handsome lad that Sid. All the animals I have shared my life with stay within me, all highly individual, but all gave live and received love. I suspect there will soon be another in your life when it feels right. Dont rush into it, grieve for Sid but you know you have it in you to give another a happy loving life.

What a lovely reply too. Thanks. I’m crying as i write this. I shouldn’t because i already have Iritis in my left eye. More stress will bring it on in my right eye too. I was thinking to myself. Why do we, as humans, need to love? We have to have a connection. I think at the end. Sid knew i was his friend. (He hated being picked up). So i always respected his wishes. (I respected my fingers too!!)

The nastiest bite I ever got was from a hamster! I know now that due to their short sight, it mistook me for food so it wasnt meant. Animals can sometimes be less complex than humans I think, so a relationship with an animal can be easier at times maybe? I am fortunate generally I like ( most! ) people, but I never feel quite right unless and animal is also in my life too.

Love your choice of names. They are funny aren’t they, can imagine the great strawberry fight 🍓. My boys had a hamster called Jaws. Well we had a few hamsters but Jaws was very special.

He was such a lump, used to get stuck in toilet roll tubes. The kids used to see how much kibble he could pack away in his pouches before he used to rush off and unload in his secret larder. Like yours he was a much loved pet who lived way beyond the average age for a hamster.

They all look the same. But they’re not. They have individual characters & personalities. My ex partner’s son had a hammie. Named after a choc bar. Can’t remember which one. He escaped up a pipe somewhere. (Sounds rude). He was gone for days. His mum said to the boy let’s go out for a burger. (Bribery can work well). Obviously trying to cheer him up. As they opened the door. A small ball of oil & dust staggered towards them. It was the adventurer! He must have been a homing hammie! It was like a love story. The hamster staggered towards him. He grabbed him & ran to his cage. The naughty hamster was glued to his water bottle for a good 20 mins. Let’s just say. He never tried to escape again! He lived to a ripe old age too.

Sorry to hear this Vixen, pets are so special aren't they. You have given him a good home and at least you know he's not suffering any more. Take care.

I’m sorry to read this pets are so comforting and never tell tails. It’s unconditional love from our diabetic cat who despite getting jabbed twice a day still turns up when called. She does refuse to walk down stairs first thing and expects a carry to kitchen for the jab looking so sad then perks up for a day snoozing in front of the fire or on our bed. lol xx

Glad you were able to find a sympathetic vet who helped with Sid. He sounds like a right little character ☺️. When you have a chronic illness, I think pets become even more important. They make us smile and laugh when you are feeling low and in pain. RIP little one. X

Sad to hear about Sid but you did everything you could for him. It hurts so much when they leave but think of all the love, laughs and cuddles they give to us. Life is very sterile without our fluffy companions.
