Knee replacement op.

Good morning. I 'm due to have a knee replacement op on Monday 28th Sept- 3 days time. However, I have a slight cold, caught from my little grandson last week. It's not a heavy head cold, but I'm concerned that my surgeon will postpone my op. Has anyone had this experience? Thanks.

I would contact the surgeons secretary today and ask for some advice. You need to be in the best possible health for an operation so you may have to delay. Isn't it just typical getting a cold before an op? I have had both knees replaced when I was 38, they have been really good operations, it takes all the nasty bone on bone pain away. Fingers crossed if you can shake it off over the weekend they may still operate but you really need the advice from your surgeon. best of luck x

I was due to have a small op years ago and started a cold. I researched homeopathic remedies etc and discovered that Aconite was good. There was also something else which I can't remember (sorry). Anyway, I started the Aconite and it made a huge difference and the surgery went ahead. Also, if you take Arnica tablets it helps enormously with preventing bruising. Well worth trying. Clemmie

Thanks for your reply. I have arnica tabs and will take them. I will also try and buy some Aconite and hope my surgery goes ahead!

I had a cold before my hip replacement last year. The surgeons are very, very careful about any possible risk of bacterial infection, but colds are viruses not bacteria, and do not pose a surgical infection risk. However, tell your consultant's office; they will monitor your temperature and heart rate more carefully, and if your breathing is affected, it may mean you can't have a general anaesthetic and need a spinal instead.

Good luck!

Thanks Cathie. I have been resting in the sunshine in my conservatory and am feeling better.

I had to have shoulder replacement surgery postponed when I had a cold, the reasoning was when they insert the breathing tube they were concerned about pushing bacteria further down into my chest and potentially creating a chest infection. With it being a major surgery they are probably going to want to be safer.

All you can do is see how you are over the weekend, chances are it will clear up and you won't have any problems. :-)
