Wrist supports

Hi All

This is my first post, I have been lurking for a bit and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good wrist support?

I have RA and my left wrist flares up from time to time. I lift weights but finding I am having to go lighter and also just feel a support may be good for general everyday activities but not sure where to start in choosing one.

Any advice would be most appreciated

Thank you!

for day to day wear I use these, I don’t think they would be suitable for lifting weights though . I bend the metal bar to fit as my wrists won’t go straight. Being neoprene they dry quickly when washed too and last a long time.

Most pharmacies stock neoprene wrist splints like the pic KittyJ has posted. Your rheumatology team should measure you for splints if they think you need them so that you get the right sort and size. I’m going back a few years when that was standard practice - it may all have changed now due to lack of resources but if you’ve an appointment soon you could try asking.

Thank you, I do have a nurse appointment soon so maybe I'll ask then.

Ask for an OT referral. They also do ‘resting splints’ which are cumbersome but great..

I was given splints - and useful advice and exercises - by the rhuemy OT after the nurse arranged for me to see her. Might be worth asking for a referral.

Hi i have worn splints for some years now and some were given to me by my physio and i have also purchased some from my pharmacy, but i have just purchased this one last week and as it’s only got 2 Velcro straps i find it so much easiest than my previous ones which I struggled with.

All RA dept's should have OT working with them. Ask the nurse to put you in contact and they should be able to supply you with the right support. They may well recommend strengthening exercises specific for your needs.Keeping fit without damaging the wrist is key. Fingers crossed for you

The wrist supports that are given from the National Health have a special hard plastic insert that is shaped to your hand (using hot water). They are helpful but for your use you may find that the version of vet wrap that I use maybe helpful for you. I occasionally find it at places like QD. If I am using a craft saw for a while my wrists get sore so using this Vet wrap help to support them and make things less painful...I couldnt wear the specialised supports to use the saw. You have to be careful not to pull it too tight but I find it most helpful.

As others have mentioned I have the wrist splints, provided by OT. I do find them very restrictive unless wearing them at night. You can get wraps which I find are better. They can be provided by hospital OT department. If you mention it to your nurse she maybe able to refer you.

These are the best:

In my humble opinion 🙃

as Kitty J said. The metal bar can b removed but probably wouldnt give u the support u need. I get mine from the hospital via Rheumatology

As criplady said my first wrist supports were from physiotherapist which rheumy referred me too. I was given similar ones to KittyJ, then I ordered some from wristsupports.co.uk

You can get compression gloves and wrist supports from you RA team. As it is NHS they are nothing fancy. I have some myself, and also purchased some from boots, but they are not cheap. Check out you RA team. Good luck.
