Wrist surgery

Hi

Has anyone had any form of hand/wrist surgery? I have been offered several surgical interventions - wrist fusion, partial wrist replacement, full wrist replacement or nerve removal. I’m struggling to decide which will be best as I cannot envisage what it will be like post surgery. I am in my early 30s and have a 6 month old baby. I also work with my hands, therefore the ramifications are quite significant. Any advice/experience would be most appreciated.

Hi I had a partial wrist replacement almost 18 months ago. I also had a tendon repaired on the same hand. The surgery went well but physio was tough. You do have to work quite hard to get the best results. Unfortunately for me I need the other one done but with more ongoing issues I have to put that on hold. I hope you come to the right decision for you. xx

Thank you ever so much for your reply. Can I ask, is the second replacement you need on the same hand? I hope you’re in a position to have it soon and that it is successful for you

Hello there, l am new to this site.

I have had fusions on both wrist, both successful. You soon become accustomed to not being able to bend the joint.

RA started in 1972, l had children aged 1 and 3. Fastened nappies with safety pins back then, got lots of help from wonderful family and friends.

Good luck in deciding which option you choose.

Thank you for the reply. Did the fusion halt the progression of the RA into your hand? At present we are leaning to this decision for long term prospects - doctors have said it will fuse anyway in time. Does taking the pain away allow you more movement, even though it is fused? Is the scarring substantial. Sorry for all the questions, the decision has quite an impact on my work and I’m really trying to make the best choice possible for my family
