pain relief

my left knee is killing me with pain now and walking is proving difficult.

I’ve a telephone appointment with my GP on Weds to see what I can get.

Has anyone else been able to get reasonable pain relief whilst waiting for knee replacement op.

I m only using nurofen at the moment and am conscious that nsaids aren’t ideal for patients with blood pressure meds - am on Bisoprolol

Many thanks

paul

I get Zapain prescribed by GP. It’s stronger co-codamol than the OTC version. I take one with an ordinary paracetamol for daytime doses but two Zapain at night to help me sleep.

hi

Tnx for that. I had that a few years ago when I had my slipped disc. It wasn’t too bad tbh.

Apart from painkillers have you tried using ice packs?

I used to have a very nice one that didn’t go hard and could be moulded to my body but I don’t know what happened to it - now I like the Koolpak instant ones you twist to activate, you get them on Amazon or Biofreeze comes as spray, gel or a roll on that gives you a little massage - you get that on Amazon too.

Deep Freeze from Tesco etc is good too. It’s the sort of stuff physios run out and spray onto injured footballers 😉

Physio type Freeze spray keeps my knee moving in bad spells when nothing else works. Hope TheBoys knee is soon improving whatever is decided. 🙏🏻 I have the Therapearls ice packs which are more flexible and not unbearable in terms of coldness. x

I’d never thought of the physio spray either!! That’s useful too

Yes and although they are cold enough to ease the joints etc they don’t make you wince.

I was told by the orth consultant before last that you can't have joint replacement within 6 months of a steroid injection.

Definitely take Paracetamol regularly, it does help other painkillers work. Obviously not with likes of cocodamol that already contains paracetamol. As others have said ice helps. If concerned re nsaids, you could use the gel version where very little is absorbed. Wearing a support may offer some relief. I also recommend doing the quad exercises that are suggested for knee replacements, as it will strengthen your muscles and take some of the strain off your knee.

Yes, I have got the radiofrequency ablation of my saphenous nerves and jenicular nerves done. This has taken away 80ish percent of my knee pain. It was done at a pain clinic by an anesthesiologist. If you are already booked for tkr this is not for you. If you have a long time ( a year or so) to wait, then it may work for you.

many thanks for that - it sounds really interesting to be honest.

Have you ever tried a Tens machine. I found it helpful when I fractured my sacrum. It helps stimulate the nerves in the area of pain and seems to help reduce the pain. I also used ice packs.
