Ikea mattresses

Hi everyone.

I have been told the Ikea 'Valevag' mattress is a very good one and has a 10 year guarantee. Has anyone with RA/ OA here bought one? I get very hot in bed often and really want a mattress that is cooler and also I sleep on my side and have constant back and hip pain, so don't know if I should order a firm one online or medium. I desperately need a new mattress as I have moved from a rented flat that was furnished with an awful bed and now am on a z bed, so want to get a good one soon and they are so expensive that I am worried I will get one and it might not be comfortable. It is such a lot of money so I would appreciate your thoughts. I would love to sleep better as I am too hot, keep waking up and have horrid pain that moves around and feel constantly tired. I don't drive either and feel too exhausted to get anyone to take me to a store or go there by bus as Ikea is so huge and hard to walk round when you feel so worn out all the time. Your comments would be very useful. Thanks.

Mattresses are such personal things, what suits & is recommended by one person may be so different for another. Are you close enough to whoever has recommended the IKEA in for you to ask if you can have a lie on theirs to see for yourself? I know it's an ask but it could save a potentially expensive mistake.

I have both RD & OA & my h has various problems including a back condition. We have tried various types of mattresses in our 38 years (next month) of married life, including IKEA, but must say our most recent, bought the back end of last year, has been our most successful given we have different needs. It's a wool 3000 pocket sprung & we bought it without trying, we just took a punt working on we could change it if it didn’t suit. It's a Hyder & marketed as soft but it's not at all, we figured it wouldn't be due to the amount of springs, it's supportive, both for myself, a side sleeper, & my h, a back sleeper.

I wish you luck in finding the perfect mattress for your needs.

I find the mattress is not so much an issue as long as I bung a couple of deep mattress toppers on it. The soft variety, not the foam ones. Helps with joint pain by cushioning. Currently have them on a firm mattress but I find medium ok too. IKEA will (usually) delivery but not sure of returns policy.

Have you looked on Amazon…they have lots of mattresses with customer comments on mattresses they have bought…..from around £100.

Don’t be persuaded you have to spend a fortune on a mattress…look for one that you can try for a short time & return it if it isn’t satisfactory.

Of course you will need space to store your Zbed if you need to return it….or you won’t have anything to sleep on….but if you can’t get to a store that is the best way you can make an informed choice.

Good Luck!

I bought a memory foam mattress topper that moulds into the body. It supports my joints brilliantly.

I'm having trouble with mattresses and pillows too. I've not heard about the IKEA one. I'll check it out. Mattresses are expensive!

Duck feather pillows are what I find best for me and RA

Do check the size of the mattress to the bed it's going on as IKEA sizes are different. I had IKEA bed but kept my slumber down mattress and it was six inches shorter than bed! Eventually had to buy brand new bed and mattress!!!

We bought our daughter this mattress in November and moved house in December, whilst sorting bedrooms etc I shared her bed and that mattress, I found amazing. We had not long got a new one for ourselves from Bensons which is also a lovely mattress but if I could I would go back and order this one instead. For me personally as someone with aggressive RA I'd recommend this mattress. You do have a year to return things at IKEA, maybe check the policy on mattresses first. Good luck

Please could you explain which mattress it is that you bought your daughter? As I'm trying to work out what to buy and really struggling as there's far too many to choose from. Thanks.

Of course. It's the VALEVÅG pocket spring medium firm. It has the blue on the sides

I cant help you regarding ikea mattresses but I bought an Emma mattress for our spare room and as I’ve had to sleep in there as our own bed seem like I’ve been sleeping on rocks we’ve decided to purchase another Emma it’s quite expensive at almost £400 but I don’t find it too hot and currently I have a temperature and chest infection and of course my joints have been kicking my ass for almost three months. They have a 200 night trial and almost a 10 year guarantee. Works for me but we are all different.

If you go onto BBC sounds, Greg Foot did a recent podcast all about mattresses. (Podcast is called Sliced Bread). Also Which always review these things. You have to join to see the full reviews but you can usually get a trial membership for £1 or look up good housekeeping, they seem to use the same reviews.

hi, I have both arthritis and Lupus among other things, 4 years ago, we invested in a new bed , a divan, with a 'pillow' top mattress, it was from Bensons Beds, since first night I have found it so comfy, I have tried memory foam, no good at all, once you are on it, if like me you are heavy and have very painful joints, then you wont beable to move! awful mattresses, but in the end its up to you. Mine was at time a considered purchase and is heavy to lift, but so worth the money xx

I have this one..

I also bought a goose-feather topper (M&S) and quilt and pillows about a year ago. It’s like a water bed now… ridiculously cosy.
