Sciatic type pain following knee replacement

Hello all, I had a total knee replacement 3 weeks ago and since then I have had a constant pain emanating from my lower spine and across my buttock. It’s worse when lying down. Has anyone else had this after TKR? I’m hoping it’s just upset muscles rather than true sciatica.

Your phsio could help with that. If in doubt ring the ward

I worked as an orthopaedic nurse for over 30yrs. We occasionally had patients with it. I think it’s partly down to positioning on the theatre table, or could be the change in your gait, putting more weight on operated side, after long period of better leg taking most of the weight. Localised inflammation may also be a cause. Unfortunately most of the sciatic stretches aren’t really suitable for so soon after knee replacement. You could try taking an anti inflammatory, if you don’t have any contraindications. Hope it settles soon 🤗

Thanks for replying, I wondered if positioning during the op could have pinched something as the pain was present before I even got out of bed after the op. It’s beginning to ease and I’m hoping the physio can advise next week.

It's most likely to be due to the positioning on the operating table has caused nipping of the part of the sciatic nerve. Best bet is asking the physio for advice.

Yes l have heard that too, apparently when they do the surgery, they position you in a certain way. My Friend had to cancel her knee replacement because her back is really bad, and she will not do it till she gets the okay from the back specialist. Physio and hot pool therapy will probably help. Hope you get well soon😊
