following a conversation with a colleague yesterday I’d like to ask those who have knee replacements….. can you now kneel? The colleague said it’s not possible to kneel after a knee replacement which I thought seeemd very odd! Thanks

I worked as an orthopaedic nurse for over 30yrs. Your friend is correct, generally the advice was you can’t kneel once you have a knee replacement. Thishas changed over the years, with most surgeons allowing it. You are unlikely to damage the new knee joint, but it remains something many find difficult to do, most report that being due to pain from damaged tissue, rather than neuropathic pain. You should discuss it with your surgeon, who will give you figures on how many manage.

I can kneel alright It is not easy at first but after i2 months I can now although it not as good as the original one I also have had one hip replaced ie left hip right knee. I think It would be better if the knee and hip had had a person tranplant!!!!!

My friend just had a second knee replaced privately, he's mobile but he cannot kneel on either knee, hope this helps.

Hello girli, I had a TKR in 2018. I can kneel, squat, kick and run. If I have to kneel for a long period, O wear knee protectors, like the one people who lay floors use. So I can work in the garden for a long time. Good luck with yours. Just so your exercises 😉🤞

thank you. I’m not that far down the line yet….. but the replies certainly make me feel I need to try and avoid knee replacement if at all possible!

I had a knee replacement 6 years ago and can kneel on it, can some times be uncomfortable. I think it can depend on the flexibility of the knee. I did work very hard on the physio as I wanted to continue cycling.

I haven't tried. I think my problem with kneeling would be getting back up again rather than the actual kneeling itself.

Had my right knee replaced in 2017,left knee replaced in may of this year.I can kneel without a problem, can't sit back on my heels though.

I think it does depend on flexibility before and working on that again as soon as you can after surgery, obviously in discussions with physio and surgeon.

Good luck with it,each time it was a miserable few weeks but so worth it.

I can kneel but the knee is numb, no feeling as the skin is thick with overgrowth from the scab developed when healing. You have to begin the bending exercises early and massage the kneel to avoid overgrowth of the scab inside the skin.

Hi, I had a total left knee replacement in August 2021. My consultant told me that he does not want me to kneel ever again and I had to agree to this prior to the op!!

yes, that’s exactly what my colleague was told. It’s certainly made me think carefully!

I must say it doesn’t bother me too much and you learn to adapt. It was a small price to pay getting rid of some of the pain!

Hi, yes I have had 2 KR plus one revision over time, I squat rather than bend, and manage o.k.If I need to sit on the floor for some reason,I go down on my backside and can easily get up again with a bit of time. I am 74 still drive locally and walk o k though not run. . bye.

I had a full knee replacement on 28/4/23, so just over a week post op. Have to say most painful thing EVER! Really struggled to get on top of pain relief and have ended up in local a&e due to how ill I was feeling, changed meds for last couple of days but feel a little better at this stage. Struggled with rehab exercises due to severe pain, concern I have now is, knee although painful seemed lose, yesterday muscles around need seemed to have gone into a “locked” state, and has really restricted my movement which is worrying me greatly!

Anyone had something similar and does it pass? Focused on rehab and getting better but worried they will have to give me another op to loosen the muscles around my knee, any advice/support would be amazing to try and out my mind at rest! Thank you 😊

I’m sorry to hear you are so uncomfortable following your surgery. It’s probably worth posting your questions on a new message, you will likely get more replies that way. Best of luck
