pain relief
Hi Beatty, if it is for joint pain I take 2 cocodamol at night 2OO/3O, works well
We aren’t really allowed to recommend painkillers, sorry. Can you ask your pharmacist for any suggestions if the GP can’t help? Heatpads on the sore joints might help you too? Hope your rheumy appointment is soon.
Not sure you want to take too much before you see your rheumy - you want them to see you at your very worst.
I can’t take naproxen either - I’ve been prescribed hydroxychloroquine but even with that I find generally keeping nice and warm helps me I use heat pads, hot water bottles, a nice soak in a hot bath, , those stick on Cura Heat / Deep Heat patches are good plus I sometimes use Volterol or Pernatron to rub on - it’s not easy especially with this cold, damp weather.
Hope you don’t have to wait too long to see a rheumatologist.
I’m lactose intolerant and unable to take naproxen, but tolerate most other nsaids, till I had to stop when I had a stroke. Your gp should be abkk look e to suggest other nsaids or Cox inhibitors to try. However as your appointment approaches I would hold off on any analgesics that lessen inflammation. You want the rheumatologist to be able to see and feel inflammation. As C others have said heat is good at subsiding pain.
Thanks all. Xx
Hi
Like other people on the thread I had to stop taking naproxen after having a heart attack. I asked both my rheumatologist and GP what I could replace naproxen with and got very non committal answers, I think they where both worried about the cardiac meds I am taking. Anyway as I found that not taking an anti inflammatory I was starting to get pain in various places, I suggested to my GP that I start taking Zapain ( 30 / 500 mg codeine phosphate/ paracetamol) which I had been prescribed before. They work - but I am very careful on the amount I take in a day, the packaging reads ‘can cause addiction contains opioid’.
My prescription reads ‘ take 2 four times a day when required, max 8 capsules per day’!! - I only take one in the morning and one at night if needed.
Hope you get your meds sorted and you feel better.

I can’t take Naproxen either because I have asthma and a hiatus hernia. I am taking Hydroxy & Lefludamide but they are not pain killers. As for pain killers, I am not doing at all well. I take Oramorph at the same time as paracetamol 4 times daily which is a strong mix but even they don’t work all that well. In the past, I have had Co-Codomol (now called Zapain ) & Tramadol & they helped for a short time but then stopped. It is a nightmare getting anything that works now I am afraid it is all just trial & error & everyone is very different in what they are able to tolorate & what helps all I can say is to keep trying & good luck with your appointment xxx
All my consultant could suggest was paracetamol. He says to take the maximum dose and not wait for pain as the effects are accumulative. Not that I'd ever have to wait for pain. I am taking Naproxen and it's helping a bit but not much. The paracetamol gives just a smidge more relief.
if this for joints like feet rub half a raw onion on it then put sock over top 👍
Morning. I tried naproxen and diclofenac, but they made me poorly. I now take Amitriptyline which was prescribed for my Fibromyalgia (I also have RA). This has made a huge difference to me. Cocodamol never worked either…
I rarely get pain now, but when I do, I use deep heat (supermarket) or piroxicam gel (prescription). Also a couple of paracetamol. Central heating is my truest source of relief tbh. It’s something I do not scrimp on.
Sulfasalazine and Mtx are my RA meds. I notice straight away if I miss my Sulfasalazine 🥴.
Diazepam !
