Hi, I’ve been on one of my meds for 4 weeks now and due to start mtx in couple of days. I forgot to ask nurse what pain killers I can take once I start mtx. Thanks

When I started methotrexate I was also prescribed naproxen and co co codamol. I hope you feel better soon.

My Internist said he was going to use prednizone for pain relief until the MTX kicked in. It is not a pain killer but it takes the inflammation down so fast that I get relief in less than 24 hours. However, it is a steroid and is short term only. According to the doctor anyway.

Yes, not a good idea in the long term if yiu can avoid it!

We can't give medical advice. Please contact your doctor/nurse. I hope you will get something that gives you quick pain relief.

None of the standard pain meds are contra-indicated with MTX. So you can use what you have been prescribed.

Hi, try contacting you pharmacy I’m sure they’ll be able to sort you out, wishing you well 🤗 X

You can ask your GP for pain relief &/or an NSAID, nothing that I know of is contraindicated with MTX. He may question an NSAID but as you're having drug monitoring blood tests should you be unfortunate enough to have adverse effects they will seen. Needs must with RD & Rheumy's do regularly prescribe it alongside DMARDs including MTX. I've been on a number of different ones, 5 off the top of my head, since being diagnosed 11 years ago, 10 years on MTX.

If necessary a short course of steroids will help if you're really struggling but I would have thought your Rheumy would have prescribed them with your MTX if he thought it necessary.

Good to be cautious.Steroids often preferred when waiting for effect of dmard to kick in. Here some recent research on the topic of concomitant use of mtx and nsaids. Take care.Simba
