Trochanteric bursitis and tendinopathy

HI,

I have seronegative RA and have had both hips replaced due to osteoarthritis (201 5 and 2017)

I've had burning and sharp pains in my right hip and thigh on and off since last year and my Rheumatologist referred me to the consultant who did my hip replacements.

The result is that I have greater trochanteric pain syndrome (which is really bursitis and tendinopathy of the hip area) and I've been referred for ultrasound guided steroid injections and 'needling' of the tendons. Has anyone any experience of this treatment please?

I haven't I'm afraid so unable to help. When I had GTPS I was given strengthening exercises & had to grin & bear it, though there wasn’t a lot of grinning to be honest.I hope someone else has experience of them & both treatments/procedures help you & relieve the pain.

I have had this for years , exercises haven’t really helped but the guided steroid injections have made a difference. Some have been more successful than others, but usually i have had months of relief. I hope it works well for you 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I have had this and the injections bring me relief.

I’m also having physio along side.

It’s awful especially at night laying on it x

hi. Yes sadly, another joy of RA. The injections have worked really well for me, but what has also helped was getting a thick topper for our bed. It has made such a difference as it takes the pressure of the hip joints. Good luck.

Thanks for replies. I'm glad to see that the injections have helped quite a few of you.

My appointment is on the 15th and it's a radiology doctor who is doing it so I will report back.

My orthopaedic consultant insists that I must take no physical exercise and walk with a stick for 6 weeks and not sleep on that side for 6 to 8 weeks!

It happened with both of mine First 2015 then other 2020. Both times bursitis so have had a few steroid jabs in those areas. Short term ok but then it comes back. Unlucky I guess. So have to live with it. Never been instructed to do what you've been told just it might feel worse for a time. Best of

HI Jackie1947, so your trochanteric bursitis flared up after hip replacements?

I teach a wee community dance class once a week ( all ladies between 70 and 85) and I thought maybe that was causing it as we do quite a few grapevine steps and my thighs burn for a day or so after.

I see both rheumatology and ortho consultants privately as still in Bupa at the moment although possible not be able to afford it soon.

Hello, I had an image guided steroid injection recently for what my GP thinks is greater trochanteric pain syndrome. It's worth a try as many do get relief for quite some time. Unfortunately the injection didn't work for me. I'm trying hard with the physio exercises now. Look forward to seeing your post and hearing to how you get on.
