Our "the cat" has been a bit odd recently didn't want to go out, very quiet and thirsty so today it went to the vet. It was so poorly it didn't even scream all the way to the next village so we knew it was the right thing to do. So after blood test and some more tests the poor little devil is diabetic and tonight started injections. The vet said I'll give you a lesson unless your frightened of needles ? not me I said I use a needle every week so will be fine. We did the trial and she never even felt it so hopefully will be back to normal soon. The vet said it could be expensive but actually it will cost £50 a month for insulin and needles so its not really expensive but we have to give her a chance. She has over the years been such a naughty distraction from the trials of RA that it's the least I can do for her. So now first jab done she is b----y ignoring me and sitting on the husbands lap looking a bit miffed. Oh well at least she isn't suffering at all and its been caught before any damage has been done. x

Well done. Glad you ae giving her a chance although I am sure it won't be easy. Hope you both settle into a routine that works. x

Isn't it good that our animals are well looked after by vets that are willing to see them face to face ? I hope the insulin does it's magic and she keeps well.

One of the differences is GPs are paid up front, before, or even if they don't see you. Where as dentists, for example are paid after they provide care. There is no incentive as it were for the GP to see you (apart from professionalism, morals or whatever).

Aah, I'm so pleased it was discovered early and can be treated. Did she react to you sticking the needle in? I agree though, considering the cost of some vet treatments, £50 per month for insulin doesn't sound too horrendous. They are a massive distraction and comfort, aren't they? My 2 boys have definitely helped me to keep going over the last year with my doesn't-want-to-mend still broken leg and it's resultant surgeries and complications.😠

They give you something else to focus on and think about. Mine usually manage to make me smile at least once a day, either through naughtiness or cuteness! I'm sure you know what I mean.😊

I hope she's back to normal very soon, and forgives you for her daily jab!😉X

We do everything we can for our furry friends don't we. One of mine is on daily medication for chronic kidney disease, not as bad as injecting but still demanding.

I'm so glad you managed to catch the diabetes in time 🤗

Typical feline ingratitude! Hopefully she'll continue to improve and return to her 'loving you' self.

This has nothing to do with RA but it is a medical query 🤔How do you know what dose of insulin to give if you don’t measure her blood sugar?(I am a cat lover and owner of two beautiful Burmese)

The vet said we give her the lowest dose, then they measure her blood again next week. I know its not daily but she's got a lot more energy this morning and protested about being injected. xx

Glad you managed to get her to the vets and she received swift diagnosis and treatment. I had a dog who lived for years after having to have a special diet and treatment for an illness he had. Like you he initially showed me a look of distain when I presented him with his first bowl of food (and concealed meds), however as freshly cooked chicken was allowed he soon came round!! Hope each day she begins to improve. Warm Wishes xx

Sorry to hear your little cat is now on insulin I hope she tolerates it and feels better. I know it's quite expensive as my daughter's dog was on insulin for several years but her vet was willing to supply a prescription (with a charge) which allowed her to buy the insulin from a drug supplier which worked out not so expensive she also bought her own syringes. I never felt comfortable doing her injections when she stayed with me even though I do my own and it doesn't bother me anymore but I still used to apologise to the little dog over and over although she didn't seem to mind.

Hi your so right, we get to know them so well, sorry to hear your cats now diabetic, I’ve had two diabetic cats the second one was a rescue, I took her on because I didn’t think anyone would want the responsibility, dear little thing so easy to do the injections did ours while they eat, just make sure they eat enough or hypo’s can start, your cat will be on a really low dose I would of thought, they’ll forgive you soon, specially if you can give them high protein treats, I had to give them the special diet of high protein no cereal’s she also like the food called untamed as a treat, it gets easier over time xx

Yes she has now to have special food and is a moggy from cat rescue as well not a pedigree. And is now lying in the sunshine looking out the window so perhaps as its sunny will go out in a minute. They bring so much pleasure don't they ? x

Sorry to hear your cats now diabetic, but hoot will be feeling better now on insulin. I’m sure she’ll return to her loving self soon.I’ve been very lucky with my surgery, if I complete an EConsult I’m generally contacted and seen the same day or next morning. Some have been F2F if required, others a telephone call. Far easier doing that than trying to get past the receptionist on the phone 🤪

Typical cat! I'm so glad you discovered the problem so quickly and easily treated too. I miss mine very much. Genghis used to love wrapping himself like a living fur tippet around my neck and purr

I think you are fortunate in having a local vet who can see your cat promptly. My gran-daughter is training to be a vet and tells me that there is a shortage and in some areas a waiting list system to be seen and you may need to shop around if it's urgent. Locally someone had to go, not to the local vet, but to a vet practice in a town 12 miles away and then to another vetinary practice 30 miles away when they couldn't deal with it.

There are few vets around here like dentists they are hard to find unless you're already a patient. I don't know if we are lazy but we've never shopped around so same dentist for 45 years and the vets for 30. Same doctor since birth so over 68 years so its been funny at times when a young GP said that something was a matter of trust and I said I've only ever been to this practice so are you saying you don't trust me???? he backtracked really quickly. Did not mean that, it was just a passing remark and of course the prescription for antibiotics would be put on my repeat list straight away. Never actually used the facility but it's now available in the cupboard at the weekend when its 111 and a very very long wait to see anyone.

That’s cats for you isn’t it - there you are doing your very best for her, lovingly spending all that money on her life saving injections etc to repay her for all the years of pleasure she has given you and now she’s sitting on your husbands knee looking miffed as if it’s all your fault. That’s one of the things I love about cats 🤣
