Human Bone Paste and Human Bone Chippings in Surgery.

Anyone suffered from the use of human bone paste or human bone chippings in surgery? After 27 ops I feel my ortho surgeon has failed me. After 3 replacement wrists in same wrist, then getting septic arthritis, decision made to fuse. Fusion dislocated, which he said was my fault and when he put it back together he used human bone paste and human bone chippings, (without my knowledge). This burst open wound site and burned my hand and wrist and burned inside my arm as well. Consultants remark was, he has seen worse. Have had life threatening infection, have iv antibiotics every day for 6 weeks, blood tests twice a week and weekly ecg. and special dressing on arm which sucks out gunk, which is changed weekly when batteries need replacing. Consultant knew of my bodies rejection to certain things, but seemed pleased he had put 2 packets of the stuff in. Really unhappy. Anyone had experience with human bone filler?

Can I ask why you stay with this surgeon as he seems so inept at understanding your predicament? Why don’t you ask for a referral to a different doctor?

I have thought of moving but all the consultants seem to be in each others pockets so whoever I move to would may be bias against me. It is very annoying knowing he knew of my sensitivities he should do this and leave me in such a mess.

I cannot move hospitals whilst I am having the daily treatment

This all sounds horrendous. I’d use the time you’re recuperating on researching a new surgeon so you can move as soon as you’re able. Have you put in a complaint ?

I am thinking of finding someone else and tomorrow I am going to make further enquiries. I have asked for my medical records.

Thanks for responding.

My goodness, this sounds like a horror story and he's the monster! What on earth is he playing at! It sounds like a nightmare and also he shouldn't be blaming you because he's incompetent. Do you have a good relationship with your GP? If so, what does he/she feel about all this? I feel so sorry for you having to put up with it. Please try and get help somewhere else, you really need it. Have you considered reporting him? I wish you luck with this, it's just dreadful and you have suffered enough. x

It feels as if I in a horror story.

My GP receives treatment from him so don't know if he will want to suggest someone else.

Thinking about this mess a lot, I will have to find someone else who will take me on part way through treatment

I have asked for my medical records for last 6 days in hospital, then perhaps the last 3 years and take legal action.

Thanks for your response.

The thing is, would your GP put up with the same treatment - I think not. Good luck with it all muffin, you certainly deserve some and please let us know how you get on. x

You can only take action within 3 years of the presumed error leading to the injury. There is a statutory limit on NHS claims. So it may be that what has gone on before really isn't relevant. I'm sorry but I'm going down this route for an AKI and I had an admission in writing of what went wrong about six months after it first occurred and why, before I even went to a solicitor. There is no legal aid for such claims anymore so you need to find a good solicitor and get proper advice because its a minefield. I can promise you that I've found it a long road and very, very complicated and I had the admission of fault. If this helps it can be a clause on some house insurance or even car insurance policies to access free legal advice and the year of the insurance has to be the year of the problem occurring not your present insurers. They call in all your records and each case is reviewed by an independent expert and it takes time. So if you think you have a claim then its vital to see a solicitor who can help and the damages are also capped so the old no win no fee doesn't mean you'll be awarded £10,00 to find the costs are £9,000 so do look into it and best of luck. There is also NHS Resolutions have a look at that too.

Thank you very much for this information, I am not looking for compensation as the NHS needs all it can get, just an apology would suffice.

Thats all I wanted until I discovered that my life had changed for ever due to a computer contracting error and system negligence so was not a doctors mistake. Cost cutting on contracts can cause harm. And I also wanted the truth , my incident was the subject of a Serious Incident Report because of my compliant and what I did saved nine other people who also were not advised of a problem. I was patient zero and no one would have known had I not done something. I'm rewarded by the knowledge that taking action does change things. As you say its not about the money and to be frank its not a lot in any event definitely not life changing even though my injury is, but the only way you can do anything legally is by a solicitor unless you're prepared to risk thousands and thats why I said about NHS resolutions because believe me you'll need help. I'm legally qualified in another area but I couldn't understand the reports. Its a very specialised area and the barrister who looked at my records was in London and they go back to the day you're born. I wish you well and the NHS is not insured for claims anyway, because each area pays into a scheme for claims so it makes no difference to the budget at all. I've been down this route same thing, and was advised that they pay into a huge fund it can be accessed on line and you can see by area the successful claims. Please look up NHS Resolutions.

Thank you and it's why I bang on about going for the blood tests and keeping a note of the date as you just never know what might happen and you need that information. I always said if it was a tired doctor then I'd forget it, we all make mistakes but a badly worded contract for blood testing values and no audit log of who made the mistake made me really angry. What happened to me cannot now happen to anyone else and I've a letter from the Chairman of the Area Health Authority saying thank you and about the other people involved. It don't change what happened to me but it sure has for other people. I just think enjoy every day and make the most of family because over the past two years it's not just been the low GFR but all the medicine adjustments, the fatigue and sickness. And above all never accept an excuse if you think something might be amiss then ask questions and complain. And if necessary take on the people who are answerable for the decisions they make to save pennies and inflict so badly on our lives. I'd like to think its about the moral question of doing the right thing for the right reason and not revenge.

Truly a life changing event for you, and one that should never have happened.

Definitely sounds like you are doing these things out of sense of moral responsibility, and I admire it. As we know, if people never stand up and do these things, others suffer and nothing changes. At least you've done what you can do to prevent this. I only hope I would have the strength to do the same if ever in a similar situation (although obviously hope I never am).
