Surgery Today!

I’m having spinal surgery today in my neck. So glad it’s finally happening but rather nervous too. I have cervical stenosis and myelopathy so I’m hoping this operation will stop the progression of spinal cord damage 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻. Has anyone else had this happen. Not sure if it’s RA related or not.

Good luck Katie. I haven’t had surgery on my back, but I was told, during a 10 week hospital stay last year, that I too have spinal stenosis. I was too shocked to ask the dr, button suspect it’s in my lower back.

My son in his late thirties had neck surgery a few years ago. His arms were going numb because his nerves were being squashed. The surgeon replaced a vertebra with a ‘cadaver’ vertebra and a plate and some screws.

They went in through the front of his neck to do it and all he has is a little scar sounds grim but it wasn’t, he called me when he got back to the ward and said all the numbness had gone as soon as he woke up. He lives in NZ and stayed with friends for a week and was back to work two weeks later.

Good luck with it all 💐

I’m out the other side now! Phew! I’m glad your son’s operation went well. I had C5/6 and C6/7 replaced with a “cage” four years ago and have a scar at the front left of my neck. This time they went in through the other side at the front. Some complications from surgery at the moment but was told this is normal. Xxx

Good to hear from you, must be a relief that it’s over, I hope your complications are minor and you get home soon. 💐

Thank you all for your kind wishes. I’m in hospital recovering but have a few complications. Been told this is normal though. Just glad the surgery is finished now 🫣🫣🫣

Hope all went well - I am currently waiting for MRI to test for myelopathy and have spinal stenosis in lower spine with RA for good measure so will be interested how it all goes for you

Hi Nanny_bee

Yes I have myelopathy too. It’s really not nice, especially with RA alongside too 😞😞. Surgery went okay but I’ve got severe weakness in my left leg as well as bladder problems. Docs assure me it should get better with time 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I have spinal stenosis in the lower spine. Had it diagnosed 10+ before RA. Not been told it's RA related . Good luck 🍀

Hope it went well. I had the same in 2002 and the neurosurgery was successful.

so glad it’s all done, Kati66. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

My husband was told he has spinal stenosis in January (chronic degenerative spinal disease). He was offered surgery, but decided against it as atm he’s not having any problems and at the age of 78 he’d rather leave alone for the time being as the neurosurgeon couldn’t guarantee surgery to be a success.

Wishing you all the best. Keep us updated. x

Thank you 🥰

I would not have gone on the surgery route but my symptoms were having a severe impact on my life. Hope your hubby stays symptom free 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Hi Katie. Hope you’re improving well now and your symptoms waning.

My hubby’s pain has got worse in the last couple of weeks, but thankfully he’s got no other symptoms he was told to look out for.

He’s going to see the GP this afternoon to see if he can prescribe any other pain killers as he thinks he needs something stronger than paracetamol. He can’t get on with ibrufen and doesn’t really want to take co-codamol.

It’s affecting his quality of life now as it’s almost lunchtime now before he’s properly mobile. And The exercises the physiotherapist gave him don’t seem to be working either.

We’re pinning our hopes on the new bed which arrives tomorrow 🤞

Sorry for the ramble….

Hi Dora,

I hope your hubby can get some pain relief from the doctors 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻. I’m six weeks post surgery now and recovery is very slow but I was told this would be the case. It can take up to 18months for the fusion to complete so I’m just taking it steady. Hubby soon tells me off if he thinks I’m doing too much 🤣🤣🤣

Ha, just a case of baby steps for you I guess. But at least the surgery is now behind you and it’s all upwards from now on. x

Several years ago I had C1 C2 fusion. My spine could have damaged the cord through just a sneeze. Went really well. Took a while until could leave brace off. I have no pain in my neck but limited movement but still able to drive. All the best

That’s what is so scary, having a ticking time bomb in your neck!! I was told having a fall could potentially lead to paralysis, so I’m hoping that risk has gone down now 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Hi Kati, I have this in several spots in the cervical spine and also osteophytes impinging on the nerve roots. Similar issue at the base of the lumbar spine. Hoping to have surgery myself later this year. Hope it all goes swimmingly for you. Best wishes for your surgery and recovery!

Kati66 profile image
Kati66 in reply toSkibbythecat

Yes, I had complex osteophytes and they replaced the disc with a carbon fibre cage at C4/5. Had C5/6 and C6/7 done in 2020 xxx

Hope all went well, Kati and you are now on the other side of things, recovering well.

I've got spinal stenosis and ankylosing spondylitis and have severe pain and stiffness in my neck and spine with tingling now and again. I've had tests to check for compression but as yet, nothing has shown up, but I know it's progressive.

How are you doing now? Hope you are recovering well x
