Oh my gosh! Have hairdressers been closed too? Ours were closed March to June, and then again October and November. But operating since then on one customer per 12m2 floor space.

Since number are rising here again I got my hair cut two weeks ago just in case!

My hair hasn't been cut since last summer. I wasn't well enough to go for my October appointment then things closed down.I'm very wary about going into a hairdressers, anyone else feel the same ?

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply toMmrr

Oh gosh when mine retires in a few years I’ll be knocking on his door at home!!

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply toNeonkittie17

It's going into a hairdressing salon that really worries me, coronavirus wise, and they will be very busy when things do open up. I'm not comfortable with the number of people attending the salon o a day to day basis.

helixhelix profile image
helixhelix in reply toMmrr

My hairdresser seems very careful. Only one person at a time, chair and table sprayed between appts, equipment sterilised, all towels changed, and masks etc. And the chance of transmission from surfaces is turning out to be very unlikely.

You could double mask for extra security too.

Green230461 profile image
Green230461 in reply tohelixhelix

That sounds like a really good place.

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply tohelixhelix

I had my hair cut at the hairdressers twice last year in the local village near by mobile home (which I don't have anymore), as a wee place they were very good. Our local hairdressers is much bigger and busier, I'm really not that keen to visit. I'll need to have my hair cut at some point though, so might need to look around.

Green230461 profile image
Green230461 in reply toMmrr

My husbands best ever haircut was by a street vender in Rome. Took twenty mins and that included eyebrows

Longlocks profile image
Longlocks in reply toMmrr

Look for a mobile hairdresser. That’s what I do and we are just as good as salons x

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply toLonglocks

Possibly, but .....my wee house is my haven, noone has been in it, other than my partner of whom I have an extended household with since last March. I'm not keen to let anyone in for now.

Longlocks profile image
Longlocks in reply toMmrr

I totally understand. Having been virtually nowhere and self isolated since Christmas. I have my shopping delivered and have visited a shop twice (to get picture frames for my art to sell) my partner has only just gone back to work after my 3 weeks post vaccine and he strips his clothes off in the kitchen when he comes in 😳😂. But on the 12th April I HAVE to go back to work. It’s quite scary really but I will be super careful and sanitise myself and my equipment and ALWAYS wear a mask and make my clients wear one too. I’m hoping for better weather and I will cut hair outside lol.

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply toLonglocks

Cutting hair outside actually passed through my mind....along asit isn't raining or windy !

Longlocks profile image
Longlocks in reply toMmrr

I did a lot outside at every opportunity last year and will continue to do so. As you said as long as it’s not raining or too cold or windy. Otherwise I try and work in a well ventilated room with windows open. Good luck I hope you manage to get a haircut somehow xx

Green230461 profile image

My hubby does the same clothes off in the wash after work. He says it’s to keep me safe- I think men just like an excuse to get undressed 😘

LoneEra profile image
LoneEra in reply toMmrr

You could ask them for an extra early appointment. Some of them are very understanding and will open the salon when no-one else is there (they did this for my Mum). They also tend to deep clean the night before.

I must say when I went in November, my salon was excellent. Only a few clients, lots of masks, visors, cleaning and so on. But I get that it can be scary - all the hot air blowing around doesn’t help x

Lolabridge profile image

Lucky you. My hair has grown so long I can live with it as it is but I know it would be better cut to chin length. It’s just the thought of getting organised that stops me. Everyone in my Zoom art group apart from me has an appointment.

Think hairdressers are very careful. Last time I went - probably September last year - I was planning on going again then Christmas lockdown happened.

Anyway, my guy had been on a course. The staff were divided into two groups and worked on alternate days, there were only two staff on each with a client. It was hand gel every time I moved, disposable towels, face masks etc, etc. He said he felt quite nervous about starting up again - it has to be a trust thing - you have to trust that the staff are ok and they have to trust that you wouldn’t go if you thought you might be infected. What was interesting though was that because he was fresh from his course and full of safety knowledge he asked what I thought was the most dangerous thing in the room for spreading the virus. I thought of the cash machine and a few other things and he said no, it was the broom for sweeping up hair because it was shared by the whole staff shared. He also said that larger corporate groups in town could afford to give their staff regular covid tests so you might find your hairdresser gets tested regularly.

Green230461 profile image
Green230461 in reply toFruitandnutcase

That is fascinating 🧐 I suppose in posh salons they will all have their own broom? A bit like the film Practical Magic?come on in ladies but bring your own broom?

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply toGreen230461

Ha, ha, I doubt that. I suppose it was just an interesting fact about how the virus could be spread through something that no one ever really thought about. 😉

Lizard28 profile image
Lizard28 in reply toMmrr

Try and get an early morning appointment, this is what I do, feel a little bit better and there are no delays in waiting about. Then you are out before more clients come in.

Green230461 profile image
Green230461 in reply toLizard28

That is a clever way to go and you feel so much better afterwards. I always feel younger. Maybe that’s why my mum went every week?

Green230461 profile image
Green230461 in reply toMmrr

Last time I went in September they only allowed me in the salon. As I left someone else came in 😃

I feel the same. In fact there’s lots of things I still don’t do even when we’re told we can. I’ve spent a year now mostly at home, I’m not willing to risk it yet and for a good while.

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply toHaz58

Simple pleasures it's true! I've been dying and cutting my own hair since last March. My first attempt at dying my hair blonde was a disaster. The dye rendered my hair a 'Trump Orange' and was definitely not the colour I was aiming for. As I told a friend the other day, things that I used to take for granted (e.g. getting my hair cut, going out for a coffee, nipping down to the pub.) seem exotic now.

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply toMoniqueB

Oh my .. Trump orange! I’m sure you’re expert now at your colouring.

Neonkittie17 profile image

Sounds like you’ve got it all under control! I have a funny crown and fringe so I daren’t do my own would do my hubby’s if he wanted and we have hairdressing scissors but he is embracing the rock star look from the 1970s! Suits him and he often grows it long.

Can't wait - last had mine cut on December 4th and I usually have it done every 5 weeks! I go to my hairdresser's house and she's very careful - gown, mask visor and cleaning between clients. She says that I can have the first appointment when it's allowed 💇💃

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply toBoxerlady

Yes I go to my hairdressers house, first appointment 12th April, she to is very careful, all the PPE in place. Last appointment was beginning December, have cut my fringe but dare not try cutting the rest, it would look a worse mess than it does now. Hope you can get your appointment then as well as under current guidelines they should be able to start 12th April.

Green230461 profile image
Green230461

I am feeling quite excited about it. I have only been out for blood test dentist and covid jab all year !

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply toGreen230461

I am pretty much the same, Green! I’ve been once to my hairdresser on Ist September when it was much safer and numbers low etc. Also my Rtx infusion on 8 September, timed to be safer too, and the other outings have been vaccine and blood tests.

My hairdresser is a large north Leeds salon and only half his staff are in as they work longer hours (usually 12 hour shifts and they have two teams) and Sundays to compensate for this. Every other seat/work station is taped off and same for the basins. You’re not allowed to bring a coat in unless you take it off and retrieve it yourself from a little coat room with open door and you can’t put any bags on the surfaces. Knees or floor in front of your feet. You pay an increase for a one use only gown and cape and three disposable towels and they don’t serve drinks .. just a water dispenser with disposable paper cups which pop out. There are no magazines and you download online mags they put on your phone. No waiting allowed on the reception sofas and high Perspex shields up all round reception. Staff wear both masks and Perspex visors and gloves and you keep your mask on all the time. They take your tell now with the forehead scanner since I last went (started this in October) and they have gels everywhere too. They allow ten mins between clients to thoroughly cleanse scissors and combs and work stations/chairs which were always allocated to specific stylists. My hairdresser is the owner and he’s been innovative in every way for over 35 years since he set up with his wife. Smaller salons can be equally as well prepared as they have less staff and clients through them. My hubby and I went for 8am so there were even less people in but it was not crowded in any way and they also have a two metre gap between work stations. They’ve worked so hard and I know many places have. You also have to register so they can trace you if needed but I’m on the database anyhow and so are regulars.

Green230461 profile image
Green230461 in reply toNeonkittie17

What a fantastic effort to make sure all the clients are safe. I would definitely go there if I lived in the north. All that must have cost them a fortune. Glad you have somewhere special and safe to go 😀

Oh yes I totally agree and hair appointment are so important.I’m exhausted having just spent 2 hours colouring my grey roots with the ready mixed permanent colour my hairdresser kindly delivered to my door. All that time with my arms in the air, fingers gripping (and locking) on the applicator brush, leaning over the bath to rinse, wash, condition and rinse. Then having to blow dry and style it which is not easy now as it’s grown so much and out of shape. It’s the fourth time I’ve gone through this torture!I’ve got an appointment at the salon booked for April 12th and if it gets cancelled I will probably have a tantrum!! 😳

Gigi71 profile image
Gigi71

My appointment is on the 12th April, my hairdresser is coming to my house, she will be in PPE including a mask and visor, before she comes in she takes your temperature. Luckily she will be having her first vaccine jab on the 14th March, I really can’t wait, I’ve been coloring my hair and as it’s so thick it takes forever to blow dry, I have to have a lay down in a darken room after!! X

Green230461 in reply toGigi71

They really are making a huge effort to keep us safe.

Gigi71 profile image
Gigi71 in reply toGreen230461

They certainly are, my hairdresser is OCD anyway, bless her we have become good friends over the years, so I know how careful she is. I have been shielding, my family are always very concerned about me, but we are going to have to try and live with this, Iv had my first vaccine over 5 weeks ago and feel a lot happier, plus the rates in my area, Essex, have dropped hugely. It will boost me greatly to have my hair cut and blow dried. 😁 all the best to you too. X

I had an appointment cancelled just as this lockdown started 🙁 so mine needs done but no sign yet on them opening up again, I hope I’m first on her list, it’s only a small hairdresser, two chairs in it so I feel ok about going in. I bought a hairdresser kit on last lockdown to do my fringe so feel not too bad atm, watched lots of u-tube videos lol but hubby won’t let me trim his, no idea why 🙄 lol been colouring my own hair which is not too bad, mite save money and continue to do this. But oh what a luxury getting your hair done again, I look forward to the day.

I’m so looking forward to my appointment on 20th April My hairdresser has been ultra careful throughout the pandemic up until they were closed in December. She wears a mask, visor, black scrubs are her new uniform that are laundered nightly at the salon. She also uses disposable towels and wipes down/sanitises thoroughly between clients. She only has one client/workstation in operation at a time whereas she would normally have two or three clients in operation at a time at different stages in the hairdressing process. Clients have to keep all their possessions (including coat) with them in a bag .

They are desperate to get back to work and so will do whatever is needed to make clients feel safe. 👍

Delighted and looking forward to having my hair done but a bit shocked a hairdresser was still open against lockdown laws. Locally a barber was fined £1000 for cutting a footballers hair a few weeks ago. They cannot open till April the 12th earliest unless they a received a dispensation from the local authority, I think in cases of cutting cancer patient’s hair ect. It’s against the law!

Green230461 profile image
Green230461 in reply toJeanCP

That is so good that they made dispensations for cancer patients as it would if nothing else cheer them up and provide a bit of normality in these dreadful times.

I have the opposite problem and want mine to grow. Due to high dose steroids & maybe Covid my waist length hair started to get thinner & it was too depressing seeing hairbrushfuls every day so decided to take action & cut it off to shoulders. I've got an appointment booked on the 20th April. I used the root touch up spray on my parting that I posted about when this present lockdown first started, called it my new best friend. I did colour it last week, well husband did it for me, looks alright and should last me till my appointment. My hairdressers leave gaps between clients times, temperature taken, disposable towels and gowns, masks and face shields on. I've had to cut my fringe, I didn't want the blunt my mums just cut my fringe look, I can't for the life of me cut into how the hairdressers do even after watching YouTube on how to do it, I then had a light bulb moment of how to cut it..pinking shears and it works. 😂😂

I've doing my husbands hair right from the first lockdown and must admit it looks good, it's my new found lockdown skill. Heard on the local radio yesterday that a local barbers got raided by the police, they were cutting mens hair and had nine men waiting.
