Anyone had any problems on Abatacept self injection?

Not sure I really want to know the horrid bits but looks like I may be on Abatacept as it's easier for me to self inject a biologic rather than travel to have infusions of Rituximab. Thanks all.

I've been self injecting for over 10 years with various biologics, the latest being Abatacept. I don't think you really get used to doing it and different medications have slightly different syringes or pens. Depending where you live either a nurse will come to you or you go to your clinic and they will help with the first and usually second injections - that is they will talk you through doing it yourself. My Abatacept syringes are spring loaded which means the needle automatically withdraws when the plunger is fully pushed down which because I started with normal syringes has taken some getting used to. Some people prefer to inject in their tummy other thighs but that is your preference just bear in mind whether your hands are affected and what angle you need to inject - perhaps before taking the end off the syringe practice handling the syringe to find the most comfortable hold. Having also done a couple of infusion drugs I definitely prefer to self inject as it is less disruptive especially if it works for you and you can carry on with a 'normal' life. S

Hi amnesia3637 I inject embrel every Monday not nice and it stings for a while but after that it's ok . I would rather do it myself than keep going to the hospital . I will see how things are tomorrow as I have app with the Ra nurse and they are very good

i have been injecting with abatacept now since January. i can't do it myself as my hand is a wee bit twisted but my rheumy team were great in that they instructed a great neighbour of mine to do it for me. so far it grand. i have no problems with it at all even though it is the old fashion type of syringe where the needle is visible and it is quite long but it stings for a second and then there is nothing.......hope you do well. it is so much easier that having to go all the way to the hospital once a week for a 10 second injection.....
