Piling on the pounds

Been out for a run...what a thoroughly depressing experience.

If I put on much more weight I'm going to need to wear a bra!

If anyone is thinking of starting a weight loss club I'm up for it. I need to lose a stone.

I've always said worry about the weight later but now it IS later for me. I've gone three months, slowly putting on a stone and now it has to come off. Trouble is I'm just constantly hungry and yes, I end up eating crap!

Appreciate the reply Lizzy, just having a rant :-)

Thing is Joe I run two or three times a week and go to the gym! I'm just eating like a pig! Hungry ALL of the time at the minute.

If only Hercu!! I used to eat as much as I liked and didn't put any weight on as well. I love running (have done it for years) but it's getting bad now as bits of me are moving in directions they shouldn't be moving in!

Oh dear.  I know it's depressing (the whole weight thing), but giving up smoking has done more good than a bit of extra weight does harm.  That aside,  it still makes you feel like crap.  Weight is all about food and weight loss is all about calories in v's  calories out.

Nozmo profile image
NozmoValued Contributor in reply tomushen

True Mushen, no regrets about stopping smoking, one of the best things I've done. Just wish I wasn't so hungry all of the time.

Nothing else for it - will have to eat less! Simple as that.

mushen profile image
mushenValued Contributor in reply toNozmo

Oh god you make it sound so easy!!  😀   I did read that for most people the weight they gain quitting smoking is lost again within a year.  Hey, there is hope for us all yet!  You're doing great, always have that thought uppermost in your mind.

Nozmo profile image
NozmoValued Contributor in reply tomushen

Thanks mushen. Think I'm sick of it enough now to go for it.

mushen profile image
mushenValued Contributor in reply toNozmo

Get yourself a calorie tracking app - I use Fat Secret - it's free and really helps you track what you are eating. Exercise helps but weight loss is 80% food,  20% exercise.  Oh and avoid low fat foods, they are all full of sugar.  Look at it this way, if you can give up smoking, you can sure as hell do this!

Nozmo profile image
NozmoValued Contributor in reply tomushen

My thoughts exactly! I'll look up that app you mention...thanks for that. I'll post my weight tomorrow on here and then once a week to keep myself going. Nobody needs to read it but it will work as my little record keeper. Currently lying on the sofa after eating a curry. Not ideal but it all starts tomorrow! Thanks mushen.

I sooo know what you mean.

I,m into celery sticks at the moment,  with fat free youghart, mixed with, mint and grated cucumber, I just dip away all night, no calories.

I also make chunky soups, as they keep you filled up for longer than smooth soups.

Maybe have a look on line a really low fat food.

I feel your pain, but the weight will come off, I,m not a runner, but I dance away to a bit of lively music, it helps

Above post sounds just like my husband when he quit.  He will be 2 years quit in May and did put on over a stone.   He literally just was eating all around him as his taste buds just went crazy when he quit and he went mad for all the bad stuff, pizza's, burgers, chocolate, boiled sweets, crisps and  but lost it again (but that has been due to medical reasons and had to change his diet completely, I will post about this shortly).

I would suggest for now just cutting out all the crap and start eating loads of fruit and vegetables which gives that full feeling.  Remember your quit is your number one priority...

No problems about the smoking Roisin. As Hidden  says - smoking simply isn't an option. No relapsing just to lose weight. S0d that!! :-)

Worse than becoming fat is becoming fat and still being a smoker because meanwhile you've relapsed.... Now...think! Priorities :) I've lost more than I had to lose since Christmas due to a new preventive medication that I'm taking for my migraines... It's making me disappear literally... And also making me very dope... Ah well... Can't have it all...at least I'm certainly very elegant at present lol

Oh, Nozmo, I  know that  always  hungry bit and like you, I  could eat anything and not gain weight. Been drinking water with lemon, cucumber and mint since January at work, it too is great to fight the hunger pangs and very refreshing!

Nozmo profile image

How do you make that? Blend them all together?

RoisinO1 profile image
RoisinO1Administrator3 Years Smoke Free in reply toNozmo

Bought one of those water fruit juicer bottles in the supermarket, (all the rage now, good few lads at work are using them too).   It is a water bottle with a fruit juicer compartment at the bottom of the bottle that you can put in whatever fruit you like.

I slice a lemon in half, 3 leaves of mint and 3 slices of cucumber and layer them in the compartment, put on the juicer and then fill throughout the day with water.   For some reason when using the laptop posting can't copy and paste  a picture for you so if you want to google it...

Nozmo profile image
NozmoValued Contributor in reply toLevs

Ha ha! There's your problem Levs 😀

Levs profile image
Levs1000 Days Smoke Free

Well I have a slightly depressing history with this. I put on just over 3 stone quitting.  In about 4 months.  Ginger biscuits, really bad for you.  Who knew?

It took a long time for my quit to be solid so didn't do anything about it for 18mth.  Then hit the gym, lost loads, started weight training and running.  Year later I looked and felt awesome.   Life decided I was doing far too well and I got injured in Oct 13, couldn't train, could barely walk.  After months of scans, X-rays, MRI's and really sodding painful injections into my hip I still wasn't better (still not) and had put quite a bit of weight back on.

Went on holiday, was really quite down, had a row with the other half and went and had a ciggy.  Surely it was the answer?  I mean I was a size 10 (uk) when I smoked.  Nope.  Now I was fat and smoked.

Quit almost 7 weeks ago and have been dieting for the last 5 of those and lost nearly a stone.

Getting there, bit by bit.  Still can't train properly as my leg is probably never going to get better, it would help if the hospital could work out what's wrong with it but that's a whole different story....

RoisinO1 profile image
RoisinO1Administrator3 Years Smoke Free in reply toLevs

Wow Levs! How determined you are, keep it up, hope you get sorted with the injury...

Nozmo profile image
NozmoValued Contributor in reply toLevs

Oh no! Life deals out cruel blows. It's awful when you have a long term injury and can't do anything...even though you want to. Really hope you come through and the injury properly heals.

Losing a stone in five weeks is very good going though, especially without the extra exercise. If I can do what you have done I'll be happy.

Thanks Levs...got any tips?

Levs profile image
Levs1000 Days Smoke Free in reply toNozmo

Eat less and move more😂

Joking aside, it is that simple.  If you're a runner then you're already set.  Running is one of the best exercises for losing weight.  It's what injured my leg and I miss it dreadfully.  I dont think I'll ever be able to run again.

Nozmo profile image
NozmoValued Contributor in reply toLevs

Ah that's a shame, sorry to hear that Levs, really am. Running certainly puts a lot of strain on the joints.

I'm nursing a dodgy knee at the minute so might have to spend more time in the gym (which bores me) rather than running. It will have to be done though!!

 7 weeks is brilliant. :-)

Levs profile image
Levs1000 Days Smoke Free in reply toFirecrow69

Thanks.  7 weeks is amazing.  I was just shy of 4 years quit when I started again (I know, I know).  I 'only' went back to about 5 a day so it's been quite easy this time. Plus knowing I did it before, and it was really hard the first time, has made it easier.  I knew I could quit.   So I did :)

Nozmo profile image

Finding it easier than stopping smoking!!

FordyP profile image
FordyP3 Years Smoke Free

My weight isn't too bad - although could probably do with losing half a stone. I need to get back running though. Unfortunately I managed to rupture my Achilles last year and was on crutches for a few months so am only just starting to think about getting fit again. Now that the weather is beginning to improve and the evenings are brighter the prospect of going for a run after work doesn't seem quite so daunting!

Nozmo profile image
NozmoValued Contributor in reply toFordyP

Ooh, that's a bad injury Fordy...and the Achilles can take a long time to heal....as you probably know! Try a couple of tentative jogs then if everything feels ok go for it! You must have been in pretty good shape if you have done the GNR twice so the fitness will soon come back. I live about half a mile from the finish line by the way, in South Shields.

My trouble is I'm at that age when I'm never without a niggling injury. A few years ago I would have gone out every night to lose the weight but my knees won't take it any more. I'm an old wreck but I keep on doing it...because I like it!

FordyP profile image
FordyP3 Years Smoke Free

Nozmo, the Achilles was a real nightmare - I was training for another half-marathon at the time. It is a few years since I did the GNR and it was a big effort to get myself up and training again so I was doubly upset to get the injury just as my fitness levels were getting back to a reasonable level. It has taken a long time to heal and is still not 100% but getting there. Like you though I am at that stage in life where I seem to pick up other niggling injuries as well. Wish that I lived near a nice beach like you to at least make going out running a more attractive proposition

Nozmo profile image
NozmoValued Contributor

I bet it was! I've been lucky not to have that particular injury, worst I've had is torn knee ligaments.

Aye, it's nice running along the coast in the summer...when I'm not being chased by dogs that is.

Anyway, how's the quit going? Getting any easier?

FordyP profile image
FordyP3 Years Smoke Free

I think it is. I haven't been in any very tricky situations for a while but will have a few to deal with this weekend - I.e. Dinner with friends and a day out with clients at the Chelsea v Man City game - both of which would have been prime smoking times. Overall though it is definitely getting easier. The cravings have reduced a massive amount but the biggest issue is probably the tiredness/lethargy - even that is getting easier though. Main thing is to take one day at a time. You guys are a massive help though

Nozmo profile image
NozmoValued Contributor in reply toFordyP

Thanks Fordy, enjoy your weekend and I hope the cravings go easy on you. I'm away to Edinburgh to avoid English football and get drunk!

Nozmo profile image

No change this week - still 13 stone 9 pounds.

No surprise really considering the amount I had to eat and drink in Edinburgh at the weekend. Also been advised by physio to lay off running for a few weeks because of a knee problem, so that doesn't help.

Excuses, excuses...

Target for next week - lose 3lbs. Best get on with it.
