Day 5 has begun about 2 hours ago and my head is so scattered and thumping. I'm feeling like I passed well beyond irratable about an hour ago. I have some nicabate gum I still havent touched and am starting to wonder if its a step backwards. Any thoughts?

Why not go for a walk, run or hit the gym, the endorphins released help to make you feel better and get rid if that excess anger/irratibility
Good morning BR,
Personally I'd only use the gum if you have to. You've already got rid of all the nicotine in your system.
Take some deep breaths, drink some water, go for a walk.
You could try picking a quitter further along than you and read their first posts, you'll see then that this really does get easier. You're not too far off being able to look back at the last few days and realise that that's true, it already has got better.
Hang in there chuck, you can do this. You're going to be so so proud of yourself. I know I'm proud of you already!
Let us know how your day is going as you go along
Molly x
thanks guys, and sorry just a tad on the erratic side.
BR I'm sure I can speak for the majority on this site; don't apologise for irritability on this site! If it hadn't been for this forum I would not have got past 14 days; my username wasn't picked out of a hat  .
I agree with Molly, the nicotine's gone, it would be a shame to put it back! You're doing so well, exercise, washing up, anything's better than that. I just avoided people (!), read a lot, watched a lot of DVDs, ate a pile of sweeties, all sorts during my first two weeks. Angry (or even just "erratic")? I relate to that wholeheartedly.
It WILL pass though, well done so far, you're doing beautifully!

I hope you are feeling a bit better than you were this morning. You will have days like this at first, but I would say just grit your teeth and get through it the best you can, if this means gum then so be it. Do whatever you need to keep you from smoking
Better to use gum rather than have a smoke!
Even though all the nicotine has gone from the body, it takes several weeks for the brain to "downregulate" and adjust to the absence of nicotine. Until that downregulation has completed you will experience physical cravings and other quitting symptoms. They will lessen with time though. Thus it is not a terrible sin to put some nicotine into the body.
The overwhelming priority is, as you know: do not smoke!
